Well folks i have got myself a mk1 Universal Carrier (mortar carrier) iam after some advice from the guru's my grandad served with two regiments (as we all know) 2nd Bat RSF 5th Div and also 2/4 KOYLI. i am after any insignia that would have been on the vehicles during the war, and also specifically waht paint job (colour codes would be mint) for the Italy Campaign / desert campaign

Once i get the carrier back to the uk she will be sand blasted then red oxide primered and the paint put on prior to the bits being restored and the carrer re built. i know with modern warfare the chevron identifes United nations vehicles, they must have had something during ww2 especially for the carriers saying that the Germans had stolen loads of them after the Normandy carbunkle

    cheers Folks

A Carrier owner eh ? Nice to have another vehicle owner here ! Where are you bringing it in from ?

You really need one of Mike Starmer's books (or all of them !)

    http://matadormodels.co.uk/tank_museum/xcamo_starmer.htm

My Grandfather went through the war with 2nd Northamptons in 17th Bde alongside 2RSF and I have the Battalion histories (Owen has the 5 Div history as well).

I have Hodges & Taylor's "British Camouflage and markings" which is good on arm of service insignia.

Have you chosen a precise period for your markings ?

5 Div's period in the Middle East was largely with Paiforce. I have to confess to no idea of their markings - something else to look up !

which ever looks best. i have his Glen Garry which is for 2nd bat RSF but either will do. He was part of the Landings at Salerno / garigliano straights but this was with the KOYLI at this point....same job different regiment...would they have been sand coloured or green ?

Carrier coming in from Fergus Ontario (shipped from Torronto) I have spotted a better one in Minnesota but awaiting a price for it.

You finally found one then, great stuff. Hope the importation all goes smoothly.

Might be worth contacting Nigel (here) as he's written some rather good books on Carriers with quite a bit of reference to markings.

Got any pictures we can see?
I'd be more than a little interested in seeing some pics of the rebuild when it begins.

Richard - the 2/4th KOYLI's were in 138 th bde along with 6th Lincs and 6th York & Lancs and so were in 46th Div which had been in North Africa and not the desert and so were green/brown and not sandy - the Div insignia was a green Oak Tree - when he went to RSF he would have been in 5th Div with the White "Y" - they were the "Globetrotters" and he probably was at Anzio with them.

    Cheers

will post some pictures up asap i will create a build thread on here when i get started. the import should be ok iam oing through ShipMyCar.co.uk who will take car of it. as it is 1942 carrier no import or export duties I will have to pay VAT at 5% which is ok that said it is costing me close to 2K to get her home (not including the carrier)

    Richard,
Congratulations on obtaining your carrier. I too would be extremely pleased to see pictures of the restoration work as it progresses.
I know that it will take a lot of your time up, so the best of luck.

    Regards
    Tom

    This gets a tad complicated.
    Have a look here.
    Infantry Division Vehicle Markings

I know for example that 2 Wilts in 13 Bde , 5th Div had the tac sign 57 , as they were junior battalion in the senior brigade of the Div.
see marking number 11 on that site.

2RSF were senior Bn in their Bde so they would have 67 on a brown square as in marking number 17 on that website.

See 5th Div order of battle.
5th Infantry Division (United Kingdom) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

the pictures I've seen of 5th Div vehicles the div sign is a white Y on a black circle.

As for 2/4 KOYLI in 46th Div they'd have 61 on a green square as they middle Bn in the middle brigade by the time your Grandad was with them.
    Hope that all makes sense.

I hope this is right, feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

    Good luck with the carrier.
    Love to see photos .

long way off paint guys, but here are the pics, i ask about paint really as when i start painting up the carrier components (to protect them) i would rather paint them the final colour rather than leave them in red oxide lying in peices.

the chassis number is 10131 not sure if we could find out the CT number from that. and was made in Windsor Ontario circa 1942.

i quite like the Caunter pattern cammo but I doubt my grandad would have used it, like i say he was with 5th Div 2nd Bat RSF in Qum, i also still have him 2nd RSF in Italy (pics of him stood on a bridge with pals) and again later still in Italy with the KOYLI (hat changed to a beret with a horn enclosing a rose)

so if anyone can help with colour schemes it would help me dividends.

ps sorry for the tonnes of pictures

I'm on thin ice here, but if the chassis number is read as 1013, then N Watson's book puts the range 993-1129 down as 'missing' in his Canadian carrier records (10131 seems to have too many digits? though there's far from an exhaustive list in there it does have CT serials for a good many).
Any chance of a clearer shot of the data plate or chassis number?

I hope you're asking on Maple leaf up too Richard, some real carrier expertise there.

    Cheers,
    Adam.

i am registered on there matey and there is a thread about this carrier. but no replies on the serial number as yet. I have zoomed in and its pretty clear....ish cant get any better pics of the data plate but Rob (who has not posted it yet) will take a rubbing from it at some point.

so what about the schemes in the mean time :)

Adame its the lower hull number, just been told, will have to locate the serial number from somewhere in the engine bay i reckon.

Looks in good nick there, rust is easliy sorted. Looks mostly there.

Id invest in a blast cabinet and compressor, if you havent got one. Pretty cheap these day.
