Alright guys this is where your opinion comes in. I want to redo the User Titles on these forums(the text that shows under your name, changes after X, XX, XXX posts)and I'm not sure what I should change them to, something WWII related obviously but this is where you guys come in...

    Sooo....what should they be?

Ah you mean like on the ww1 forum?

    Private
    Lance-Corporal
    Corporal
    Sergeant
    Sergeant-Major
    Second Lieutenant
    Lieutenant
    Captain
    Major
    Lieut-Colonel
    Brigadier-General
    Major-General
    Lieut-General

Hmm have to have a think - cant be the same now can it! ;)

I do think we need 'dough boy' in their somewhere though...

I like how that works but you're right, the same isn't good...I'll probably end up using just a handful of those.

How about a mix. Example dough boy from the US, an Ensign from France,

You can find pretty much everything here -

    http://www.kotfsc.com/thunderbolt/ranks.htm

Not sure if you want Axis ranks or just Allies but of course there would be plenty to choose from...

    Hope its helpful...

I think a mix is good, represent all sides.

Ooh - how about this Nick? (sorry getting carried away researching ideas!)

When the Home Guard was first formed it had its own rank structure. The ranks were as follows:

Home Guard Appointment vs Equivalent Army Rank

    Zone Commander = Brigadier/Colonel
    Group Commander = Colonel
    Battalion Commander = Lieutenant-Colonel
    Company Commander = Major
    Platoon Commander = Captain/Lieutenant/2nd Lieutenant
    Section Commander = Sergeant
    Squad Commander = Corporal/Lance-Corporal
    Volunteer = Private

These were changed in November 1940 to bring the Home Guard structure in line with the regular army.

    Kinda works though eh?

    I suggest:
    • Private
    • Private First Class
    • Corporal
    • Lance Corporal
    • Sergeant
    • Sergeant Major
    • Staff Sergeant
    • II Lieutenant
    • Lieutenant
    • Captain
    • Major
    • Lieutenant Colonel
    • Colonel
    • Brigadier General
    • Major General
    • Lieutenant General
    • General
    • Field Marshal
At least the ranks of US, Commonwealth and British Army are almost the same —posted above—, but are very similar to German, French, Soviet and Italian ranks. With some few differences. But as it is a British and English-speaking forum we may have a Anglo-American majority and a mixing of Anglo-American ranks with continental European ranks could confused many people.

    Regards,

On a matter of accuracy, may I point out that the rank of Brigadier General in the British Army had ceased by WW2; it was replaced by the rank of Brigadier. I have no idea if it existed in the US Army at this time.

To add my ‘two penny’ worth, giving automatic ‘ranks’ seems endemic of most forums, and why not. However, is it not feasible to allow people to choose which nationality’s ‘rank’ they would like? British ranks are fine with me but I for one would not like to find I had suddenly acquired a German rank or, even worse, an SS rank!

I appreciate it’s only a bit of run and I would have no wish to detract from anyone’s fun, but, by the same token I don’t see why ‘fun’ for some should be offensive to others? ;)

This is exactly the same topic that crops up on other forums. At the end of the day it is Nick's forum and however he decides to run/manage it we should respect it.

Well maybe that’s because some forums are just virtual ‘playground’ groups?

Maybe they are but then any of us can choose not to visit, just like turning the TV over or off if we think we might be offended or don't like what is on.

Just saying it doesn't really matter in the grand scheme of things does it? The people that visit and post information and the judgement of Nick and any moderators (that I fully support the action of) are what make forum and its validity.

We are guests in Nicks front room...

One shouldnt get caught up in trivia although inevitable, after all just look at what we are discussing! ;)

Can we keep our ranks from the 14-18 war? Or, if not, maybe we can emulate the "Colonel Blimp" character from "Dad's Army" - Corporal Colonel Square.

Hey guys, I appreciate all the input, is there anyone who in particular is upset with the ranks as they are now? Let me know.

Yes these are MY forums and you are guests but that doesn't mean everything needs to go my way, I'm trying to make this more enjoyable for everyone who comes, not just myself.

Nick, I like this place but I'd suggest that more ranks should be included. More ranks make it more fun and historically more accurate.
