User ranks

    Marek,

    It is in some countries and not in others and often depends on just how close the retiree was to moving up in rank in any case. I worked with a chap here in NZ who retired as Head of the Defence forces with the rank of Lt. General (normally our highest rank when we are not at war) but was then appointed head of MI with the rank of full general (he's not in the CoC.)

    Interesting chap. Once said that the only real advantage to outranking anyone was a: not getting shouted at by WO1s and b: sleeping in.
