I believe the official rank is 'Pleb'.

Leading Hands are the backbone of the RN they do most of the dirty and essential work by telling ABs to do it, the first rung of the leadership ladder.

None of your class snob talk. I'm ashamed of you Kitty!

I know the navy has odinary seaman, followed by ab seaman, then leading seaman, then petty officer, the CPO, warrant officer, then sub lt, lt ......etc

Just wondering what the army equivalent was, as the air force follows it more or less but instead of PO etc they have corporal, sergeant etc

I joined the RAF at the time the recruiting posters proclaimed "There's A Place For You In The RAF" (1948) -So, like a fool, I volunteered. Now, and looking back, I never regreted it. I'm Still a fool! Any chance of getting a second stripe, I always fancied being royalty? Southern Geordie.

Sorry to jump in before Southern Geordie but I must say something before I forget it (I am getting on, you know) :)

I too was a little p.....d off on my previous atavar.... it took me so long to make full corporal in 1946 that I resented the fact that you had only given me one stripe. Now, as a VETERAN I have a hat that wouldn't disgrace a brigadier so I'm not complaining !!

    Ron,
Blame Lee, it's his site, I can just fiddle about with it a bit.:p
I'm annoyed with myself for not spotting you weren't made up to Veteran.
That was Dani from Bulgaria that did that.
I tried to fix it but couldn't, sorry.

Geordie, you'll earn your second stripe by posting.

Owen. Thanks for my, well-earned promotion to corporal. When I first joined up. a corporal drill instructor told our squad "you don't salute corporals- you kneal" Since then, I've always wanted to be one- a corporal, that is.

I see I'm the same rank as my dear old dad! He served in WW2 where he was affectionately known as 'Boomerang' McIntyre from his bouncing in Rank from Sergeant to WO1 and back and then back to WO1.

Never did find out ALL the details but what I do know made the few strands of hair I had all fall out.

I'm still waiting for someone to let me know why the 78 Div flash (the golden battleaxe) was chosen as one of the avatars.
As someone who was proud to have been in that Div in wartime I still find the symbol quite evocative.
Will someone who understands these matters let me know if I could add an image of the battleaxe (which I already posess) to my existing avatar?

    Thanks in advance :)

Some one mentioned that they are the same rank on this forum as their dad.

I would have to go some to reach my dad's rank.
He made captain by the end of the war.
They made him a major when he retired.
On his death they made him a lieutenant colonel.

    Marek

P.S. He was in the Polish army.
Is it the same custom in other countries to increment the rank on retirement from the forces and on death?
