Very nice to see the recognition from the US.

I just wonder if this will prompt his own unit and the MOD into making a recommendation.

I would not think so, otherwise it would be perceived as a double up of awards & the MOD does not like that & has this line of thought..." it doesn't matter who gave it to him he got one aready"

sir, please don't get me wrong, i was not trying to demean the MID, what i was getting at was if the marines thought it was worth a gong, then perhaps the MOD should give him something of equal value.

In that photo I see the award is in a presentation frame.
Call me dim but does that mean he's not allowed to wear it on his uniform ?

I believe ORs are not allowed to wear a medal not presented by the Queen, MoD etc.

Irecieved two medals (one from Kuwait and another from Saudi arabia) after my service in Gulf War 1. Iwas not allowed to wear them on my uniform, although some of my collegues wore them as minitures on their mess dress, I think only Generals etc are allowed to wear foreign awards "for their men".

I'm not a great beliver in gongs, the duties you carry out in your profession are part of your job, and you're paid for it. However, I do know it feels good to be recognised, not by your government but by your peers, in whichever army they serve.

    john,

not sure that it is the same thing.

Whilst i would acknowledge that campaign medals in respect of the gulf war may not be worn as such in uniform, this was not a campaign medal but a foreign award gazetted in US army orders for meritorious service.

There are 2 wearing classifications for wearing such awards being unrestricted & restricted.

All he has to do is make application to wear it & it will be either approved or not approved (by the Queen). There are a number of sorts running around with Bronze stars, Legion's of Merit (up in groups) and the like & they are have been granted permissionto wear in uniform.

I agree. If he got the attention of the Marines, it is worth noting. They are considerably more parsimonious when handing out adornments than some of the other forces.

No argument here, Simon and Jeff, if you are recognised by your peers as having won a gong in (or sometimes out of) action (e.g. the George Cross) then you should be able to wear it.

Recognition by other forces is a deserved plus but only when appropriate and not handed out with the rations, or by the bucket load, at the end of a campaign, and if they are, the bucket should start at the bottom and not the top, mainly because the bucket would have been ordered, cleaned, polished, filled and delivered by those at the bottom. When I say the bottom, I don't mean of the rank structure, I mean the bottom of the fighting structure.

I would like to finish by saying, whenever I am corrected (accurately) or put right ('cause I don't know everything), thank you.

    Kind regards

    John
