Hi James, Yes definately on Lough Neagh and pretty close to shore, Doug lists the aircraft as being a B-17 in the mud but its definately a Sunderland, i have information on this particular aircraft if you would like me to send it, i came across it the other week ill route it out, ooh and appologies for any glitches on the site, seem to be having problems displaying content on some browsers but should be ok now., thanks for visiting.

Will I should have it in a past list from UAS or Roberts crashlog ( Air Britain ).
I think I have a photo of the same aircraft at Shorts for salvage / scrapping.
Pretty sure this is the same aircraft , other possible candidate was a 423 Sunderland which hit a submertged object on landing on Belfast Lough but this is not her.

This one is W6075 from 2 Squadron which crashed on landing , Lough Neagh in May 43.

Will would your info confirm her as W6075 ?

Thinking of Gerry fellows and his DC which went off ahead of plan , the location of the rear facing camera to photograph the outcome of attacks can be seen ,just below the rear turret.

Appologies James, on closer inspection of the original scan it appears to be a 4 Engine Sterling i think?? very good picture of the Sunderland though =) do you have any more like that?

I think she is a Sunderland Will , behind the cockpit 2 x circular portholes , the white tail fin and just decernable the ASV on her spine.
Cockpit looks different from a Sterling , the Sterling cockpit sloped down at the back whereas this one curvers into the hull.

The camo split to white just above the surface of the water, white undersurface of wing and whiet spinner on props , I think she is a Sunderland. (IMO).

Most of those that I have are on this site in the various threads which have popped up on Lough Erne based aircraft - unfortunately this is the only one I have taken of this aircraft.

Rather than divert this thread I have put them in here.

Could give it a go ;)

Unfortunately I am not sure if I have the background to the aircraft itself , at a guess it must have been over to use one of the bombing ranges for a period of training , would have to discount it being any other first.
I am back to work tomorrow and it may take a period of time to get this done , I have a fair bit on at the moment when I go back.

    Philip,
    Nice find.
When I last went there (admittedly decades ago) it looked like it hadn't changed since the 40s.

US Army in Northern Ireland, 1941-1945

This collection of documents was compiled by the Historical Resources Branch, US Army Center of Military History, during the period March-May 1996, in conjunction with the Ulster Historical Society from Northern Ireland. It is intended to serve as an example of the types of information which can be extracted from unique resources held by the Center, and was undertaken only as a demonstration project. The Center does not have the personnel nor the mission to compile other such works, but researchers are free to conduct such projects by visiting the Center.

The collection consists of compilations of raw data assembled from materials on hand at the Center, and has not been verified against the original World War II-era records transferred from Army custody to the National Archives and Records Administration. The principal sources of information housed at the Center that were used to compile the documents are the manuscript historical monographs in the collections of the Historical Resources Branch; the Unit Data Cards and European Theater of Operations Station Cards in the collections of the Organizational History Branch; and the published histories in the Center's library. Researchers should treat these documents as preliminary surveys and use them as guides to conduct further research into the operational records in the custody of the National Archives and Records Administration's Archives II facility in College Park, Maryland, and especially in the definitive Morning Reports submitted down to the company level on a daily basis by each of the units. The Morning Reports are housed at the National Personnel Records Center, 9700 Page Boulevard, St. Louis, Missouri 63132-5000.

The US Army in Northern Ireland, 1941-1945 project consists of the following individual documents:
The Center's other holding of significance related to this subject is the Army Art Collection which includes a number of paintings made in Northern Ireland by artists assigned to or covering United States Army forces stationed there. Researchers should be aware of the potential value of such works to supplement documents and contemporary photographs now in the custody of the National Archives and Records Administration.
