Uploading photos

Sorry, chaps, but we are swaying under the weight of images.
Lovely lovely images, important and interesting images, useful images, but also Gigabytes of storage that has to be paid for.
2mb is really rather generous given how easy it now is to shrink file sizes and retain perfect detail. A couple of hundred k or less is perfectly possible if done properly.

I need to chat to the boss again about this stuff, as ideally the site should allow large upload size but then compress automatically for the actual stored image. Not entirely clear how far this is already built in or if it's easily sortable, but we need to look at it.

In the meantime, have a shufti at what file size shrinking settings may already be built into image handling on machines. It used to be easiest via shiny things like Photoshop, or web services, but a lot has changed and much of the info on threads here is now out of date.

Will start an images discussion with the Grofaz soon. See if we can get absolute clarity on what's what.
