Uploaded images get squeezed

  1. My apologies if this question has already been answered, but I'm wondering whether I'm the only one to experience this:

When I try and upload a relatively large image, but still well under the 10MB limit, it gets ridiculously downsized to the point where the details I meant to show become invisible (I usually do not post huge images just for the sake of it :) ).

This was not the case in the past. Maybe this is a result of the software change, or just because I'm dumb, or both.

    Example:
In an old 2012 post here, I successfully uploaded the first photo, named "DUKW 101 A1 AoS 534bs loading into LST 361 (381), 1.6.44 - JJp207 IWM.jpg" (I like descriptive filenames ):
    Sword Beach.

This photo is 1621x1591 and weighs 962.6 KB (1621x1591), appears as such on the post and can be downloaded with its full name, too!

However, when I now try to upload it using the "basic" uploader (the "advanced" uploader does not work on my browser for some mysterious reason), it suddenly shrinks to a mere 299.56 KB in 1200x1178 (see attachment). :(

This means that in order to keep the original size and resolution, I must now use an external image hosting website, which, in addition to being more time consuming, is possibly less reliable in the long run (I already had to change hosts once when Photobucket change its policy), and changes the filename into an (even more!) unintelligible gibberish. It's also not very simple to download the version in the original resolution from such image hosting websites, who seem to relish in confusing visitors.

What did I do wrong? Why mention a max file size of 10MB when even at one tenth of that size the file gets squeezed? Is it one of the (few) nefarious effects of the last big software change, which wreaked havoc in existing posts by swallowing into digital oblivion most attached images (but did improve the forums a lot though)? Do I post too many big images? Is "The Software" wary of unusually long filenames? Am I cursed?

I strongly suspect that in addition to the 10MB upload limit, a 1200 pixels maximum image limit is being enforced, but if so it would be nice to be aware of it (by mentioning this limit beside the 10MB one) rather than to discover it after the fact. I suspect that lots of initially stupendous images may have been "normalised" to merely "OK" ones without the poster noticing...

  2. Just noticed the CHANGE was going on, so you may ignore my previous post... until the Change is complete, when I hope it will be without object :D

Now to save all the posts I love, just in case...

  3. Hurrah! With the new software at the current settings files over 1,000 pixels do get through, although the size limit seems to be 1 MB per file now.

File size and maximum storage limits still under review.
The wheels grind slow, but a final level will be sorted soon.
