Excellent programme that focussed on Messines and didn't wander off all over the place as others documentaries in the past have done. I really enjoyed the 3D recreation of the 1917 Trench map which aided the narrative superbly.

Did you get your hands dirty Paul and do some digging ?

One thing I'd be interested to know is with the site looking as big as it was security, especially at night, must have been difficult?

I'm not an archaeologist and as this was a professional dig, I left it to the professionals. However, having spent months going backwards and forwards to the dig site, I certainly got dirty - we all did. Have a look at this:

It was an issue, but the funds were not there to secure a site of that size. Locals kept an eye on it as much as they could. In fact the only thing lost was during the open weekend when a visitor pinched something from the site!

That is one thing i would love to do some archaeology especially a dig like that.

Unfortunately the public are not allowed on such digs in Belgium due to the insurance required because of unexploded ordnance.

Paul, I know you are not yourself an archaeologist but for anyone interested in starting in the subject what would suggest should be the first step?
For underwater archaeology (something I am interested in) I would say it is the NAS:
    NAS Training
But I have just come across this:
    HOME - Archaeological Divers Association

Finally got around to watching episode One last night.

Good stuff, Paul. No-nonsense documentary without 'dramatic recreations' or too much flim-flammery. More please.

    Agree - superb programmes.
Having seen Hooge and Lochnagar craters they terrify me.
