Upcoming Ch5 Series Messines - WW1 Tunnels of Death

This new Channel 5 series about WW1 archaeology will be transmitted at 8pm on 8th and 15th November.

There is a version of the programme being shown by BBC Worldwide in US/Canada/Australia etc and in France and Germany on Arte. In the USA it will appear on the PBS Channel.

Paul,

It is a very interesting topic that was made into the film regarding the Australians at Hill 60.

I thought the film very realistic and can only image the hell of a tunnel breakthrough with hand to hand fighting in almost total darkness.

It makes me think of the hell my Grandfather went through and was only 16 when the war broke out, having joined as a boy soldier.

Gassed in 1917, survived but died in 1942 due to the effects of the gas on his lungs.

sounds great, looking forward to it. Just did some research for a production company on Messine Ridge.

One testimony sticks out where the explosion was so great that when the ground exploded and shook violently it caused an officer to lie down due to vertigo. Another eye witness said how the ground rose and fell then there was a white light turning to reds and oranges of the flames and throwing of cement cases up in the air.

Channel 5 are cranking out some good documentaries hope some more are on the way and fewer casino programmes.
