new series on ZDF - this is the first episode in full.
Be quick, before youtube take it down. No subtitles,
    good action scenes

cant find any mention of an english language version being released.

from IMDB: "We follow the experiences of five young adult friends from Berlin during the second world war (WW2). To a certain extent this series can be seen as the German counterpart of Band of Brothers: parts of the series are about the combat of the German Wehrmacht (two of the five friends are Wehrmacht soldiers while one of them is a battlefield nurse). We are given a raw picture of how the German Wehrmacht operated, including the slaughter and sometimes humiliation of its enemies. The story is about German civilians as well: one of the friends tries to avoid the deportation of her Jewish boyfriend by seducing a German officer.

Overall, the story does not provide an excuse for the way that the Germans acted in WW2 ("Wir haben es nicht gewusst"). On the contrary: it points out that not only the Nazi's but also the Wehrmacht (the 'ordinary' army) was involved in the killing of Jews and other civilians. The story is about evilness as well as about the struggle of German soldiers with their conscience while following orders. Doing so the series seem to provide a genuine picture of what really happened.

The story is set at a very good pace and the different plots unwind nicely. But what really distinguishes this series from most other WW2 series is the quality of the footage and the excellent acting. You feel the fear of a German soldier who steps on a mine; you understand that the efforts of a soldier to prevent executions are deemed to fail.

    Nothing short of excellence!"

No, it is not. I watched the whole film and thought it was well made.
It was not only very accurate (apart from minor details) but also touched many, if not all the most important aspects of the Third Reich and its war in the East.
The film very impressively illustrates what one of the five protagonists predicts at the beginning: "War will bring out only the very worst in us." Indeed it does; nobody involved will go through the experience untouched or unchanged, and there are virtually no winners.

I have to see it later.
I always suspected the German TV would have to follow with something similar as BoB.
They have the quality (actors, writers, unbiased(!) historians), it was only a matter of waiting for the right moment (would the viewers/audience accept it, wouldn't there be protests from certain foreign nations,.. ).

    Thanks for informing us.

I managed to see most of the three episodes and thought it was very well produced.

It pulled no punches to the nasty sides of war.

It mentioned that the DVD and BluRay version is available here in Germany.

Going on past Documentary type films by ZDF (Channel 2) they are only in German language.

    Regards
    Tom

And, just like that, they're gawn....

I managed to watch them though.
Didn't really get into it, not enough
combat action and too much nurse.

I guess it's great for the Germans to
be able to discuss the issues and good
    for them.

But it's no Band of Brothers!

The Guardian has reported that the German WWII drama series Generation War will be shown on BBC2 later this year. It tells the story of five German friends from 1941-45, and has been called a German Band of Brothers.

It was called Unsere Mütter, Unsere Väter, which translates as "Our Mothers, Our Fathers", in Germany, where it was well received. However, it is very controversial in Poland because of the its depiction of the Polish Home Army.

WARNING! Don't look at the Wikipedia entry on Generation War unless you're happy to read major spoilers.
