Does anyone know if it is possible to trace medals that were awarded unpublished? My grandfather returned his in the years following the war in disgust and as they were not published we have not been able to find out what they were for, though he definetly received some.

Im not worried about getting them back as I think that highly unlikely, rather I would just like to find out what they were for - his service record is basically fabrication so not particularly helpful!

    Hi

I presume you are talking about WW2 medals? For which army? Normal campaign medals were not published anywhere, but gallantry awards were in the London Gazette, if he was in the British Army?
DO you have his full service records too?

    regards

    Hi,

I presume he served in UK forces?

If so I would suggest that you apply for his service records. It will show his medal entitlement and if he returned them "in disgust".

I'm confident that there would be a record of their return on his service papers. That might support an application for their reissue.

    Good Luck

    HI

IF so you can also write to Medal Department - https://www.gov.uk/the-ministry-of-defence-medal-office
It will be quicker than applying for his service records, just let them know you are enquiring what medals he was awarded.
But I would still apply for his records also.

    regards
