  1. Hi, i was wondering if anyone knew what this is? I know the insignia is the Somerset light infantry but other than that I don't know. I did hear something about a locker label?

It's a brass bed plate, it would be hung on a soldier's bed in barracks to indicate who was occupying it. All pre-war Regulars would have been issued with one.

  3. Pre-War, I thought he was only in the army during the war. ☺

These plates don't seem to be all that common for something that would have made a nice souvenir. I wonder if they had to be handed in for brass when the war started, or whether in fact it had always been the practice that they were handed in ? Buttons and badges from all periods are fairly commonplace.

My grandfather ended up with his mates who served with him in the Dorsertshire Regiment , I have no clue what happened to his. His may well have been in the same condition as this one, he spent seven years in India, as well as Malta, Egypt and Palestine prior to the war.

Follow TD's advice in #4 and apply for his service records.

  12. I have ordered his death certificate, his service has always been a mystery. My nan his oldest child said that he was in catering, my aunt his youngest child said that he cleared land mines and my uncle the husband of my aunt said that he was in Italy in communications. The latter is probably correct as we know he went to Ireland and Italy from a newspaper clipping.

  13. Why do you ask?
