Good Morning All I am currently researching some of the names on our memorials , that unfortunately we have no information about , time as you know fades the reasons and whys these lads ( I presume) are on a particular memorial, all though obviously deserving. I have searched for this family name and found nothing , CWGC has no listing etc , can you help ? W R HOLTBURN the name is carved on a wooden tablet , however it may well be that the list of names have been 'jumbled up ' for both Wars . He is listed under 1914-1918 , however we feel he may be 1939-1945 . Any help will be appreciated Thanks Dean
Using all of the options I can think of, including wildcards and even changing Holt to Halt etc. and yes I agree, there is nothing remotely close on CWGC
Seems unlikely but putting it on here: Casualty Private HOLBURN, WILLIAM Service Number S/20991 Died 12/10/1917 Aged 27 "B" Coy. 10th Bn. Commemorated at TYNE COT MEMORIAL Location: West-Vlaanderen, Belgium Number of casualties: 35000 Cemetery/memorial reference: Panel 141 to 143. See cemetery plan Search results for names ending in tburn. Results Are there any records in local archives relating to the memorial, articles about fund-raising etc. Sometimes that can lead to more info on names listed and how they were collated.
hi thanks for looking , I had seen the Argyll man , the memorial was moved from its original location and we have no records of its completion etc . I will keep looking Dean
Can't find your particular candidate but the name of HOLTBURN does exist: Richard Holtburn buried 1877 in Dover, Kent Thomas Gilbert Holtburn buried 1909 Great Ilford, Essex Playing around with alternatives: HOLTTUM Dover, Kent Martha Holttum (Unknown-1935) - Find A Grave... This name does appear in Kent. Could it be misread: Another from WW2 HOLLMAN, WALTER RAYMOND Casualty
thanks Tony , I will have a look , I did find a William Holtum , 4th Dorsets , Fell 20/11/44 Holland .but I can not prove its him, his home address is Newnham , Faversham , so a good fit . Dean
The request is also on the Great War Forum, with the additional information that the memorial is at St Mary Magdalene & St Lawrence Parish Church, Davington, Faversham, Kent. 282241-holtburn-unknown
Another person with a sound alike surname match is a civilian who died as a result of the Gunpowder Mill explosion at Faversham in 1916, Sydney William HOLBOURN. Roll of Honour - Kent - Faversham, Great Explosion 1916
