Hi, new here, I've got a friend who is 98 and was in Italy during the war in a universal carrier. What I am trying to do without him finding out is make a model of his carrier and present it to the local military museum in his name. The only info I can get is that he was in the 10th armoured brigade in North Africa, then went to Italy but not Sicily and I think he may have ended up in Austria and didn't get home until 1946. What I would like is some info on insignia the carrier would have. I have tried to get some info from Bill but I don't want to give the game away. Thanks for any help, J.

Nice idea. I can't help but will watch this thread as the info comes in.

Please post some pictures of the model and presentation later.

There are a lot of videos on the net of restored carriers that your friend might enjoy watching.

    Hello Jerry,
Welcome,The 10th Armoured Brigade was formed in 1941 and did not see action being disbanded in 1943 ? There was a 10th Armoured Division? However , although they fought at Alam Halfa and El Alamein.I think they too were disbanded in Egypt on June 15th 1944 so they would not have been in Italy or Austria He could of course have served with one of the units that made up that division but there`s a lot. I do not think one model is going to portray his entire service. I can see the reluctance to post the chaps name but without some more information I cannot see how to progress your enquiry. Hopefully someone more knowledgeble will come along soon.

Hi again, stupidly I forgot to mention he was in the rifle brigade, in the 10th armoured division if that makes sense, I have no idea of the make up of army divisions. I think he has mentioned that it was merged into the "rifles" post war.

I wonder if these were Tower Hamlets Rifles ? Ist and 2nd Battalions became 9th and 10th Btn Rifle Brigade in 39?
2nd, 7th and 10th Battalions served in Italy? I think the 2nd ended up in Austria (unsure) at the end of the war. 1st Battalion were in Italy too but were withdrawn in 1943 and them and their 8th battalion went to North West Europe in 44 ?

The cap badge is a maltese cross surrounded by a laurel wreath with Waterloo at the top and "the rifle brigade" around the centre.

Update, I now know that there was a mailed fist on the carrier and he was in the 6th armoured division, but he cannot remember any other markings.
