Does anybody know what this is a part of? A mortar shell, is my first guess. German? English? It is quite heavy, copper, I think.

My first guess would be some sort of percussion/impact fuze, by the look of the plate at the top.

My first impression is German, I recall having seen markings similar to those on other german ordnance.

    Thanks Spotter!

It was found where Germans counter-attacked Irish Guards positions at Aam, near the Wetering Canal (Linge) on 1 October 1944.

The fuze is made from copper, so the remnants are in a good condition.

The fuze will be Brass not copper which after prolonged time in the ground can due to soil conditions lose some of the zinc in its chemical make up ,this will turn it a copper colour,if you have a good scrape at it you may be lucky and find the coppering is only shallow ,unfortunately this coppering cant be reversed,
