Can anyone tell me the difference between open arrest and close arrest awaiting trial. Many thanks.

Close arrest places a serviceman within the confines of a cell, while an open arrest merely requires that a serviceman be confined within the military camp.

    Or so I believe

That is essentially correct. The distinction parallels that between remand in custody and remand on bail in the case of someone awaiting trial in a civilian court. Close arrest minimises the possibility of the accused absconding; it also minimises the possibility of the accused attempting to "persuade" witnesses to change their evidence.
