We've only recently got a Freeview box so just started looking at a few UKTV History programmes. Not a great selection is there?
I feel that the U.S. version of History Channel has gone down hill too. Same old stuff! Maybe the two channels should swap material!
I feel that the U.S. version of History Channel has gone down hill too. Same old stuff! Maybe the two channels should swap material! We also have the History channel, which is generally quite good! UKTV History Channel shows mainly programmes made by the BBC. At present it's showing more natural history programmes than anything else. When you consider that there are channels dedicated to this subject, It makes me wonder, what's the point in having the History channel, why don't they re-name it to "More Natural History"
I feel that the U.S. version of History Channel has gone down hill too. Same old stuff! Maybe the two channels should swap material! We get a good mixture of US & UK however it is getting repetitive. I am still on analogue however they are forcing me to get digital. The first channel to close down was the History Channel that I watch 50% of the time. I am lucky and get to watch what I want, when I want as I have a second Cable box, TV, VCR & DVD in the office so I get no arguments from the kids.
UKTV History seems to be all Natural History at the moment, but there is Allies at War in there, and we'll soon hit the rerun of World at War, Fighting the Blue et al soon. Just let it go around it's cycle and something will pop up, but not much new is being made for them to buy. But lay off Natural History of Britain, it's helping me with my uni field reports!

George Luz: Hey Janovek, what ya reading? John Janovek: An article. George Luz: No shit. What's it about? John Janovek: It's about why we're fightin' the war. George Luz: Why are we fighting the war, Janovek? John Janovek: It appears the Germans are bad, very bad. George Luz: You don't say. The Germans are bad, huh? [Turns to Perconte] George Luz: Hey Frank, this guy is reading and article, that says the Germans *are bad*.
i love that line. Another Band of Brothers quote i like is: (unknown character): "This stuff is oragne, spagghetti ain't supposed to be orange." Perconte: "This ain't spagghetti, this is army noodles with ketchup."
More for you: Memorable Quotes from "Band of Brothers" (2001) (mini) And my favourite(s): Carwood Lipton: [real life interview with Lipton where he recites a quote from William Shakespeare] From this day to the ending of the world we in it shall be remembered. We lucky few, we band of brothers. For he who today sheds his blood with me shall be my brother. Richard D. Winters: [real life interview with Winters where he quotes Mike Ranney on how he answered a question his grandson once asked him] I treasure my remark to a grandson who asked, "Grandpa, were you a hero in the war?" "No", I answered, "But I served in a company of heroes". [Easy Compagny is patrolling through the Bavarian woods] Frank Perconte: Hey George. George Luz: Yeah? Frank Perconte: Kind of remind ya of Bastogne? George Luz: Yeah, now that you mention it... Except, of course, there's no snow, we got warm grub in our bellies, and the trees aren't fuckin' exploding from Kraut artillery, but yeah... Frank... other than that, it's a lot like Bastogne. Frank Perconte: Right? George Luz: Bull, smack him for me please? [Thump] George Luz: Thank you. [Translating a speech a German General is giving to his men after they all surrendered] Liebgott: Men, it's been a long war, it's been a tough war. You've fought bravely, proudly for your country. You're a special group. You've found in one another a bond, that exists only in combat, among brothers. You've shared foxholes, held each other in dire moments. You've seen death and suffered together. I'm proud to have served with each and every one of you. You all deserve long and happy lives in peace.

I'm sure that one was based on a real event, got a feeling Max Hastings refers to it in 'Armageddon'. Can't remember the Generals name though?
It is all meant to be based on real event however both Stephen Ambrose and Tom Hanks/Stephen Spielberg have taken artistic licence over some of it I'm sure. I would look it up but I haven't got Armageddon here with me...
Warren Muck: I swam the across the Niagara once. Alex Penkala: Yeah? Warren Muck: I swear. On a bet. George Luz: What, in a barrel? Warren Muck: No... God! I didn't go over the falls, George. I swam across the river. Ten miles up from the Falls. I tell ya that current is damn strong. It must have carried me at least two miles down stream before I made it across, but I got across. Now personally, I didn't think it was all that stupid. But my mom and my sister Ruth... they gave me all kinds of hell. Alex Penkala: Well, they do have a point. You're an idiot.
Theres only so much footage and so many stories, they end up rehashing this and putting a bit from one in the other. The media can't be bothered to go out and search for new material. They have to spend it on the luvvies you know.
