Can anyone point me in the right direction on how to find out which unit or regiment was in Overijse, Belgium in 1944? We believe it's a UK forces Unit. Does anyone know the answer perhaps? Thanks in advance for your help.
- the burials are from soldiers who dies early in the war in 1940. so there wouldn't necessarily be a link.
Example: Lance Corporal HINKINSON, THOMAS Service Number 2736771 Died 05/09/1944 - Not 1940 Aged 31 1st Bn. Welsh Guards Son of Thomas and Louise Hinkinson, of Wolverhampton; husband of Ada Marion A. Hinkinson, of Wolverhampton. TD Guardsman THOMAS, FRANK GILBERT Service Number 2738575 Died 05/09/1944 Aged 19 1st Bn. Welsh Guards Son of Charles Hermann D. and Alice Martha Thomas, of Tenby, Pembrokeshire.
I suspect my dad remembers the unit that was billeted there afterwards to help the locals but ideally we would like to know both. Looks like it was the Welsh Guards on the way to Brussels who liberated the town.
Got some more info out of my dad: The Germans bombed Overijse on 31st of December 1944. There were British soldiers in the area which helped them. My dad was only 4 at the time but he would now like to send a thank you note to the regiment if we can find out who they were.
