My thoughts are with the families, what terrible news especially given the wait now to find out the full circumstances.

BBC News - Six UK soldiers missing in Afghanistan
Six UK soldiers are missing, believed killed, in southern Afghanistan, the Ministry of Defence has said.

Five from the 3rd Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment and one from the 1st Battalion The Duke of Lancaster's Regiment were on patrol on Tuesday when their vehicle was hit by an explosion.

The soldiers' families have been told.

If the deaths are confirmed, it would be the biggest single loss of life in one incident since a Nimrod crash killed 14 service personnel in 2006.

If the deaths are confirmed, it would be the biggest single loss of life in one incident since a Nimrod crash killed 14 service personnel in 2006.

And it would take the toll on the British military since 2001 to 404.

Lt Col Gordon Mackenzie, spokesman for Task Force Helmand, said: "I have the tragic duty to report that six soldiers are missing, believed killed, during a security patrol.

"The six soldiers... were on patrol in a Warrior armoured fighting vehicle when it was caught in an explosion in the task force Helmand area of operations."

BBC News - Afghanistan deaths: Six dead UK soldiers named by MoD

Six British soldiers killed in southern Afghanistan by a Taliban bomb have been named by the Ministry of Defence.

Cpl Jake Hartley, 20, Pte Anthony Frampton, 20, and Pte Christopher Kershaw, 20, died in the blast.

Pte Daniel Wade, 20, Pte Daniel Wilford, 21, and Sgt Nigel Coupe, 33, were also killed when their Warrior armoured vehicle was hit on Tuesday.

The deaths take the total of British military personnel who have died in Afghanistan since 2001 to 404.

Sgt Coupe was from the 1st Battalion The Duke of Lancaster's Regiment and the other five were from 3rd Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment, based in Warminster, Wiltshire.

The deaths are the biggest single loss of British life in Afghanistan since 2006.

The six had been in Afghanistan for little more than a week. Cpl Hartley would have turned 21 on Saturday.

Senior army and intelligence officials in Helmand province told the BBC that the soldiers had been killed by a powerful, Taliban bomb that had been planted recently.

Defence Secretary Philip Hammond said the timetable for withdrawal of combat troops from Afghanistan in 2014 remained on track despite the "cowardly attack".

He said: "This will not shake our resolve to see through the mission - I believe we owe that to all the brave men and women who have sacrificed their lives and put themselves at risk over the last few years."

Prime Minister David Cameron said the deaths marked a "desperately sad day for our country".

Most of the 9,500 UK troops in Afghanistan are expected to be withdrawn by the end of 2014, when 13 years of combat operations in the country are set to cease.

The Taliban told the BBC that they carried out the attack and they were "very proud of it".

Cpl Guy, who was married, "embodied the strong family ethos of the regiment", the MoD said in a statement.
