Can anyone help ? when my father was a little boy living in London he says that one day around 1945/6 he was sat on the river bank when we saw a German u-boat going up the Thames. He has often talked about this, can anyone shine some light on the matter
Looks like this is what your Father saw cant get the pic up though that is refered to in the posts. "U-776 was the only U-Boat to sail up the Thames. She was manned by Royal Navy Personnel. Many of her crew having served on HMS. Graph. The white sweaters in the picture are of the RN Crew. The caption is indeed wrong. The River Thames was just a part of U-776's Tour of the UK ports in aid of The King George IV Fund for sailors". uboat.net - Re: U-776 on the Thames.
Wills Do you have the link? Regards Tom I do U-776 in the River Thames with Tower Bridge in background. Close shot of the U-boat passing under Westminster Bridge. There is an excellent book "the Detonators" It's all about the German's sabotage efforts in America during WW1. It's amazing that they made such a mess here in the US and almost no one remembers the story. In the book it explained that the Germans blew up an ordinance (bomb) Depot in NY's Liberty Island Black Tom. It also explains how freely they were moving their U-Boats in and around NY Harbor. After WW2 Films were found in Germany that were taken through German U-Boats periscopes during the war showing Manhattan and Coney Island all lit up at night . Even Woody Allen the comedian said as a little boy he once witnessed a German U-Boat actually surface off the coast of Coney Island.
Google Earth with 'ocean' switched on. Off Delaware U-521 other wrecks along the coast U-856 - U-869 and there are more.
U776 wasn't quite the first! UC-5, a minelayer, was captured in the Great War and displayed on the Thames before going over to America.
Not the Thames but dont forget the U boat thats still sat on the mud flats of the medway estuary Google Maps

U776 wasn't quite the first! UC-5, a minelayer, was captured in the Great War and displayed on the Thames before going over to America. Was it really? Blimey, that was the boat which sank the HS Anglia returning from France full of wounded. It sank in front of The West Ham Battalion onboard Priincess Victoria and was their 'welcome to the War'... November 17, 1915 Never knew UC-5 was captured and paraded on the Thames, would have had that in my book, lol!
Something for the third edition? I'm sure I would have noticed that when I finally sit down to read it properly (looks good from the initial peek). The grandfather of a bloke at work was one of the 'show' crew while it was moored at the embankment, a petty officer IIRC.
An old thread but new photographs pop up now and again so here we go. German U-boat U776 arrives in the Sunderland South Docks in 1945. After she was surrendered earlier in 1945, U776 took part in a publicity tour of East Coast ports, before being towed to sea and sunk off the coast of Northern Ireland. The tour raised over £6,000 for charity. [Sunderland Antiquarian Society] Kyle
