As a Canadian I am continually amazed that the U.S. still incorporates the 2nd Amendment within the constitution. The right to bear arms was made in to law in 1791, some 219 years ago.

The following taken from a recent editorial in the Globe and Mail commenting on the shootings in Tucson Arizona:

"....Handguns and assault rifles are a blight that make the U.S. one of the world's most murderous societies, on a par with South Africa and Columbia. Consider that:
-Gun Violence is the leading cause of death for young African-American men.
-According to the Brady Campaign, in 2009 there were at least 260 incidents in which three people were shot.
-In 2007, suicide by handgun claimed 17,352 people- more than those murdered by guns - and states with high rates of gun ownership have been found to have twice the gun suicide rate compared to states with low gun ownership.

A skewed veneration of Second Amendment rights mean reasonable attempts at gun control go nowhere. Federally-mandated background checks are not applied at gun shows. Many assault rifles, banned in 1994, are now back on the market, legally.

The Tucson shootings show deficiencies in areas as mental health and political discourse. And given that the event was a memorial service, Mr. Obama's main role was mourner and unifier in chief.

But because the target in the killing spree was a U.S. Congresswoman, tonight's event ( memorial service )was political. Otherwise, a mass shooting that kills six is - and this itself ought to be an outrage - below the usual threshold to summon an American president.

The celebrated master of context and nuance had a simple political task. Mr. Obama could have, at least, uttered two simple lines: " Our worship of weapons designed only to kill humans must end. In the coming weeks, I will offer a detailed response to this epidemic." A call to rein in America's gun obsession was, sadly, left unsaid...."

Alas in many of these shooting tragedies - certainly in the case of Hungerford and Dunblane and the recent tragedy in Cumbria it was the system of licencing and enforcement that was at fault - this resulted in a knee-jerk political reaction to ban responsible shooters from holding firearms so in UK we have the criminal class and the police with firearms. In the USA there are a lot of firearms most responsibly held - however around half of all gun related deaths are suicides.

A sobering thought is that in 2004 in the USA there were 42,065 vehicle accident related deaths as compared to 29,569 shooting deaths (about 50% of which were suicides) but no one advocates the banning or stricter control on the motor vehicle.

Remember people kill people guns and vehicles are just tools.

A skewed veneration of Second Amendment rights mean reasonable attempts at gun control go nowhere. Federally-mandated background checks are not applied at gun shows. Many assault rifles, banned in 1994, are now back on the market, legally.

Every time I have purchased a weapon, I have had to have a background check...especially for my Mini 14. My carbine was bought AT A GUN SHOW where a background check was needed...where in the h*ll did you get this information?

The Tucson shootings show deficiencies in areas as mental health and political discourse. And given that the event was a memorial service, Mr. Obama's main role was mourner and unifier in chief.

President Obama's lame attempt at unifying our nation has brought on a "civil war" between the liberals and conservatives, thanks to his beloved media. They have immediately pointed fingers at conservatives Rush Limbaugh and Sarah Palin for instigating the shooter's mental defective nature, which was not only wrong but totally misplaced.

But because the target in the killing spree was a U.S. Congresswoman, tonight's event ( memorial service )was political. Otherwise, a mass shooting that kills six is - and this itself ought to be an outrage - below the usual threshold to summon an American president.

Of course he's going to be in the spotlight in regards to this incident! He thinks he can handle this tragedy like it's his own 9/11 in which he can't. A liberal congresswoman was shot, for Christ sake...

If he uttered those lines on national TV would be political suicide. Now I'm going to a gun show tomorrow...to say that I worship my weapons is idiotic to say the least. There is no gun epidemic here in the United States... and to say there is is highly ignorant.

For God sakes, man! Please change your reading material.....

I am mightily displeased to see my usual "right to arm bears" line employed already, so I shall ask:1) how many people die in car incidents (accidents or otherwise) in the USA and what is the ratio of same to gunshot incidents?

    2) why have cars not been banned?

Now for the other side:3) why is the first part "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State..." so conveniently swept under the carpet?

Where did you say the popcorn was?

How many of those road related deaths are as a result of drunk drivers - There always seems to be a good handful of them on Cops 'Bad Boys Bad Boys, Watcha gunna do, watcha gunna do when they come for you'

Ps the bolding was better-I can't make sense of it now...Caps Lock is shouting.
