I would recommend Martin Lindsay, "So few got through, the personal diary of Lt.Col Martin Lindsay, DSO, MP, who served with the Gordon Highlanders in the 51st Highland Division from July, 1944, to May, 1945".

The long subtitle says it all. Martin Lindsay was the 2nd i/c of the battalion. The book appeared in 1946 but is still in print. It is wonderfully well written and reads like a novel.

See Post 32: Ancestry - War Diaries This shows their War Diary is available on Ancestry

Not a site I subscribe to, others may do.

An online search using: "1ST Battalion Gordon Highlanders" site:ww2talk.com and "1 Gordon Highlanders" site:ww2talk.com found a small number of threads here.

Note when he joined he was posted to the General Service Corps, an all-arms reception unit. It is possible to identify better his date of enlistment - a skill I do not have.

Caution: Until his Service Record arrives it is possible he was not with that battalion - unless you have a document that says different. I note your previous thread referred to him being in the 6th Gordon Highlanders.

Some research tips next via Private Message (you have access to that site option after x5 posts).

To give an approximate date when he joined the army here are some near numbers joining dates from the Royal Artillery Tracer Cards:

    14440827 28 Sep 1943
    14440829 29 Sep 1943
    14440915 30 Sep 1943

This may mean he joined under age as his 18th birthday would not have been until Jan 1944.

OP hasn’t signed in to the forum since June. I’ll send him a PM to alert him to the recent posts.
