hi guys, just found out my granddad was a cook in the 337th FA during WWI, ( his records were in the "73" fire), i don't know which Bn, he was in, but im trying to find photo's of the 337th FA any way, it's really for my dad, he hasn't seen a photo of his dad in over 40 years. what few unit rosters i have found only name officers.the 337th was part of the 88th div.
There is a specialist forum, the Great War Forum where you may find someone with photos, but bear in mind that many aren't captioned with units, let alone the men in them! How would you recognise him, specifically, almost 100 years on in a blurry, grainy black and white photo - if one should even have survived? The guys here are more specialised in Round Two. Oh, and let them have his Name, it's surprising what they can find! Good luck!
Here is the units war diary at Kew http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/SearchUI/Details?uri=C7362732 For some reason it can not be downloaded yet. Does anyone know when they are available to download?
Always worth searching any on line newspaper archives (or visit in person if you can). Can you post your Granddads details please? DOB, place of birth etc. You never know what can turn up on this web site, though Kevin is correct in that the Great War Forum is probably better suited to your needs. Also worth trying websites 'findmypast' and 'familysearch.org'. Good luck and hope you find a photo. Cheers - Maria
I did wonder when you mentioned the '73 fire, which seems to be the standard US response to Army records until you push them further and sometimes they then appear! There's no clue with your avatar so I assumed on a WW2 UK website you'd be meaning a UK unit. Doh! Most of the UK Army records were also lost in a fire, but in 1940 during Round Two. FA (apart from the obvious) in UK military terminology would refer to Field Ambulance, presumably you're referring to Field Artillery or some such? Try asking again, suggesting they survived the fire and see if they then find them... Good luck!
