My Grandfather Christopher James Colbert born October 1895 Swansea S.Wales Served in the 1st World War.

I have a photograph of him in his uniform (attached). He is aged between 19 - 23 (more likely the latter) in the photograph. He looks as though he was a Private, however I am not 100% about this.

I would love to find out his regiment and any vital records on him. Any ideas where he would have enlisted etc? He continued to live in Swansea until his death in 1969.

Most places need the basic information on an individual (such as his Rank, Service Number etc) which I do not know.
    Appreciate any help ;)
    Kindest Regards

    Hi Jen

From the on-line medal index cards he is probably 21173 Private C J Colbert 1st Garrison Essex Regiment, later 55052 Private in the Rifle Brigade.

Hi hmsk212 Thanks for that. I did have the information regarding the medal index card relating to the Essex Regiment, however did not know about the later 55052 Private in the Rifle Brigade.

How would I go about finding out more information on these medal cards? :D
Thank you so much for your response It is very much appreciated

    Hi Jen

You can download the medal index card for £3:50 from this site :-
www.documentsonline.nationalarchives.gov.uk. Just click on "search the medals" and then put Colbert in the surname section and in the Corps section put Rifle Brigade and your man should come up.
