Firstly would the number we can't quite read be his service number?
Looking for information on our Grandfather who was in the South Lancashire Regiment 1939-1945. His name was Joseph Pountley. And we have no further information apart from a headstone photo. We are in New Zealand. Not sure where to look next?
Certainly looks like it.
3653213 would fall within the correct Army Number block allocation
South Lancashire Regiment (The Prince of Wales's Volunteers) 3644001 - 3701000
Applying for copy of his service records is generally the best way to proceed.
See this link Request records of deceased service personnel - GOV.UK
Thanks. At least we know the correct number now.
There was a few South Lancs battalions during WW2. You would need to know which one(s) he was in to find out more detail about his war. It will be recorded in his service records.
Born 15 Oct 1916 in Macclesfield, Cheshire.
Son of Cornelius Pountley by his first wife Emma (nee Tomlinson).
