    Hello,

I am trying to find a regimental number of a Joseph Stephen Hughes who was apart of the Royal Artillery. I believe he was apart of the 8th army.

He was in Dunkirk and has got the certificate and medal. He also has the Italian star, War medal, Defense medal and I believe the African star.

If anyone could provide or tell me a good place where to go to find out his number it would be much appreciated.

    Thanks

    Hi,

Do you know which RA regiment he served in?

I knew my uncle was in 138 Field Regiment so went to Kew and looked thru the War Diaries. I found him listed with his army service mumber on several "sick lists". I am now waiting for his service records.

    Regards

    Steve Y

The best thing first is to apply for his service records which is one place where you will get his number. They can normally find the records from his FULL date of birth (and where he lived at the time of joining up if you have that)

Just enter Royal Artillery in on the records aplication form with full DoB as suggested.

Ill go over what I have got to see if that could bring anything up.

    Cap badge
    Dunkirk Medal
    1939-1945 Star
    War medal
    Defense Medal
    Italian Star
    African Star
    RA blazer badge
    Dunkirk Certificate
A card which has his medal diploma on and that is it.

And he wasn't "part of the Royal Artillery" he was a Gunner (regardless of rank)... and Once a Gunner always a Gunner (I should know, I'm married one!) ;)

Hello and welcome to the forum, I often find that folk want a service number to apply for service records, so just to clarify you don't ned a service number to apply for his records.

    Good luck

Ps If you ID his unit and want to know anything about his time at Dunkirk just give me a shout - I have a wee bit of info on Artillery Units in France during 1940 ;)
