Oh dear. If they don't know, it's going to be tough! Let's just assume the impossible simply takes longer!

As 4jonboy said: it could be the Africa Star with 1st or 8th Army Clasp.

The one in the middle right you missed I would take to be the France and Germany Star.

Looks like we're running out of options on this one! The painting will have to go into storage until we find out more.

Possibly if you could share that information with us it may help.

They came up with a couple of names but they didn't check out. The forum experts also suggested that the MC was with a bar.

Can anybody confirm that Major Jephson is still alive? I had assumed that he had died, but he is listed as the co-author of an upcoming book (along with his son, I think), and I have not seen an obituary.

If, as I very much hope, he is still with us, he will have celebrated his ninety-ninth birthday this summer.

I know he penned and recorded some reminiscences in the 1990s, so it's possible that he has since passed away, but--if so--I can find no trace of the fact.

A very good (and long) audio interview here:

Interesting about him being a co author - a sort of silent partner?

    Thanks, you two.

Sad to hear that he has passed on and very surprised that he didn't get a 'broadsheet obituary' given his rank, experience and MC.

I suspect that the backbone of the book (mentioned on the 'coming to a bookshelf' thread) is formed of the manuscripts he left the IWM and they've been contextualised in a wider narrative by his son.

All is not lost. Belper connection confirmed and his son will be contactable via the publishers of the book. Not unusual to see this sort of coauthorship as I know of at least three other examples.
