I am trying to trace the name of this man. He has a connection to Belper in Derbyshire. I wondered if any information could be gleaned from his unform.

Could you take the picture again but focus on the collar badge and the medal ribbons.

He appears to have an MC although I cannot tell from the picture yet whether he has a NW Europe Star or an Italy Star.

I zoomed the photo and there appears to be only one bathstar indicating a 2nd Ltd. There does appear to be Green on a medal ribbon and the colours could be an Italian star.
Is that a Mentioned in Dispatches on another medal?

The painting was found in a Belper charity shop. With a note on it saying Belper Soldier!

No expert of medals but it was an interesting learning exercise for me - corrections appreciated for my further education

No I'm not sure - I would think you are more correct on it being one of your clasps - I live and learn :salut:

I think that it is a clasp and would opt for the 2nd Derbyshire Yeomanry who served in North Africa and were then returned to UK in 1943 with going to Italy. They then supported 51 Inf Div in NW Europe.

I suspect that this chap was initially an OR for his North Africa service and was later commissioned in NW Europe where he won his MC. He would be higher than a 2Lt at the time of the sitting if he had been an Officer in North Africa.

It is a matter of tracing the History of the Derbyshire Yeomanry and seeing if they have an index of honours - if I have the right Regt.

I looked at the NA website and there were around 20 MC's awarded and three bars to the MC. Theatres awarded in were North Africa, Italy & North West Europe.

There not a family tree that I can find as yet, but other Jephson's seem to be born in the Nottinghamshire area. There are no other Jephsons born with a mothers maiden name of Edwards, so I assume he was an only child.

    Richard.

The bit that does not match for me is that he is described as a Lt (Temp Capt) and yet the painting clearly shows him as a 2Lt.
