Hi all, Had a random thought spurred by reading about the inter-war "RTC radicals". Does any book talk about exactly what training or what kind of training Hobart gave the Mobile Force while he was in command?
Chris C, I have been looking at my books to see if there was anything I could suggest. The most expansive exposition on the training program I could find, is a chapter in Robin Neillands’ The Desert Rats (ISBN: 0297811916). It consists of a number of quotes from those involved. I shall keep looking and return, should I find anything else.
Hi BFBSM, Thank you for that - I can take a look at that book next time I am at the reference library. It was only a passing thought! Chris
Chris C, you could also look at Armoured Crusader: The Biography of Major-General Sir Percy 'Hobo' Hobart,One of the Most Influential Military Commanders of the Second World War by Kenneth Macksey.
‘I decided to concentrate on dispersion, flexibility and mobility this season: to try and get the Division and formations well extended, really handy, and under quick control. To units unused to the speed and wide frontages made possible by mechanisation these matters present considerable difficulties.’ Pitt, Barrie ‘Wavell’s Command’ quoting Armoured Crusader pp.159-60.
