Hello I am researching my Great Granddad James Stewart Manning and was hoping someone could help me decipher a part on his record It says Passed Trade Test - Qualified Eng Art AIII - 01/09/1939 is Eng. Art an Artillery engineer? that is just a wild guess as he went on to serve in the Royal Artillery Many Thanks to anyone that can help Regards Jim (named for James) Neal
Engineer(ing) Artisan ? A3 being the level/grade he achieved, guessing that 2 and then 1 would be higher...? Artisan Engineer Trades - British Army Website
I'd go for Engineering Artificer. Was he associated with the Royal Army Ordnance Corps? Until the formation of the Royal Electrical and Mechanicsl Engineers in 1942, the Engineering Branch of the RAOC performed the maintenance role fof most of the Army.
