My favorite part of the Tour de France is the last day when they are going past all those spectacular chateaus as they are approaching Paris. Are there any books or websites available with information on how they were occupied or used (or abused ) between 40 and 44?
Seconded....If nothing else it has certainly shown Yorkshire to be a beautiful county. Why were all the English cheering for a German :deflag[1]:
Truly sorry to see Mark Cavendish fall so close to the finish , looks pretty bad for continuing at 100%. Have to agree, the countryside between Leeds and Harrogate is just beautiful as was the day. The PM did not look happy but the younger Royals seemed to be enjoying themselves. Did not see Lesley in the crowd but looked ! Perhaps tomorrow. I look forward to tomorrow and seeing more English countryside, nothing more beautiful than that. Gaines
I'm just waiting to see what the French Newspapers make of the Yorkshire delicacy of Yorkshire Puds and pickled onion and cucumber as a starter, never mind the Bread and butter pudding with Crème Anglais!!!!
Thogh nose, being a Yorkshireman myself although l think it would be Lobster and Frites a La Pommes!!! Nick
Lads, any nation that eats frogs legs and snails has no right to criticise. NB. I actually like Escargot. Best, Steve.
Really enjoyed watching that today , though whilst F1 qualifying on we were watching that. Good day for the Germans on 2 & 4 wheels .
Watched on both days in Harrogate, great atmosphere, really pleasing to note that amongst the freebie's that several vendors threw from their vehicles was a package showing war graves and in its centre was a packet of poppy seeds. I unfortunately did not get one it was a great way of gaining the publics attentiIon
Good to see the 'Tour' coming to fly the flag in the Norman colonies of 'Duc Guillaume' for three days, rounding it off with a finish on the Mall near the current 'des res' of the present Duke of Normandy. "Dieu et mon droit"
I'm watching a leg now and a lot of the spectators are holding bicycle wheels over their heads as the pack goes past. The look like mountain bike wheels. Anyone know what is going on?
Not spectators, Dave. Because the sections of cobbles are too narrow for the team cars to stop on when one of the inevitable punctures occurs the teams put Mechanics on each section with spares. The riders today were largely riding on 30mm wide tyres as opposed as the normal 25mm so they look a little larger than normal.
First time I've ever followed a Tour all the way through,on TV & their website. A shame it's over now, enjoyed that. La Vuelta coming up end of next month. http://www.lavuelta.com/14pr/en/index.html
Shan't buy a new one, I'll stick to my trusty 20 year old GT Talera . I can knacker myself out well enough on that.
Just been up in loft & dug out a photo of my old Sun Solo racing bike. Used it back in July 1989 to have my first trip to WW1 battlefields. 25 years ago this month....how time flies.
Owen, Looks like a good sturdy touring bike. My favourite bike from days of yore during a more hippyish period in Toronto was this old girl's bike. Very comfortable to ride which was no doubt helped by the spring loaded seat ... :P Regards ...
