requests should have been made for the transfer of water cannon to MET from PSNI what's interesting is that the cops have been a bit on the back foot and seem reluctant to take the fight to the youth. Fallout from the Ian Tomlinson case and similar, no doubt.
Camden now Hackney sounding the hottest in terms of police confrontation but perhaps the brief rain will intervene. Surprised Shepherd's Bush hasn't erupted -scrub that, Ealing is apparently kicking off. Man shot in Croydon tomorrows football matches being cancelled...
I should be in bed, but can't. Hoping it won't move further out. Will be sleeping with a knife under the pillow me thinks with hair spray to hand as well
the 'recreational rioting' is now taking a sinister turn home invasions being reported in Ealing... situation in Camden looks bad potential, officers in stab vests only and armed with asp. Minimal protection. It might be time to get what army we have available on the streets. Every other criminal is now doing jazz hands about the potential for utter lawlessness
Military intervention is a BAD mistake; the Army has minimal training for civil disorder...except to shoot! What little they got for Bosnia has now been rotated out for the most part...and their training for N.I. spiralled down over the years due to the number of...mistakes...made in the early days of Army riot control. Do THAT and the whole country goes up... Not worth the trouble or risk - or the aftermath.
I totally agree, Phylo. It's just that what I'm seeing in Camden (personal asp and stab vest only) shows the level police are stretched to this evening. The real issue is the lack of response times being reported - up to an hour of sustained looting before police arrive... and now we have the home invasions of those houses inhabited by affluent people who cant help but flaunt their wealth in the driveway or by living in a three million pound house. It's always been ironic to me that these houses are very often right beside a rough estate... It's been non stop police sirens for the last three nights here, as they scoot from one part of north London to the other, passing through my area... The turkish community in Hackney have got themselves together to protect their businesses, and they can be mental.. If anything, the army should be used to hold an area post rioting, to reassure the public. I wouldn't have them face rioters head on. One thing of note is that only Hackney (Pembury Estate) has faced off with police and had a confrontation. Everywhere else is looting and recreational rioting. Now the sinister turn of home invasion by general everyday criminals taking advantage of the lawlessness. It's going to get worse before it gets better.
reports on twitter that a witherspoons pub in Lee (near Lewisham) was 'mass mugged' Police were called but didn't even answer the phone... Shops are burning in Clapham and Notting Hill. Cars have been torched in Fulham Broadway. The Ledbury Michelin-star restaurant in Notting Hill was raided and the diners mugged. There are reports on Twitter of people carrying machetes in Notting Hill and Balham. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/crime/8687177/London-riots-live.html
30 years ago April 1981 didn't a similar thing happen? I well remember going through an area I should not have been in on the day ....Brixton & Tottenham rioted the same year sdid it not? Ah the Thatcher years Regards simon
