Well lets see. There's so much so I'll just name my top 10 German innovations because I feel Germany truly contributed to major technological advances during the Second World War.

    1. Jet Aircraft - First jet aircraft to fly was the He-178 in 1939. The Germans were the first to enter the jet age.
    2. Blitzkrieg - Yes I understand that 'Blitzkrieg' in the traditional sense has been used for thousands of years but the truly modern Blitzkrieg can be attributed to the Wehrmacht -- most notably suggested by Gen. Heinz Guderian.
    3. Fallschirmjager - Yes paratroopers were experimented with before WWII, but the Germans truly utilized them to their fullest extent (that is until Operation Mercury).
    4. Maschinengewehr - MG34, MG42, etc. -- the Heer had truly state of the art machine guns. Only fault I can think of with the MG42 (aside from inaccuracy) is its rate of fire was too fast. Even on the modern American M60 machine gun, German attributions can be seen.
    5. Total War - Forget the text book definition; I mean everyone is affected. Civilians are no exception. I'm not saying this is a good thing, but it's realistic, IMO.
    6. StG/MP-43/44 - First true versatile assault rifles. It had its faults but it was truly ahead of its time.
    7. Close air support for land-based forces - Yeah, yeah this existed before WWII but the Germans really took advantage of this concept. The Ju 87 Stuka divebomber is the prime example.
    8. Heavy bombers - the Luftwaffe was the first European power to utilize heavy bombers to the fullest extent (despite the fact that German bombers were anything but 'heavy').
    9. ____
    10. ____

[That's all I can think of for now]

  6. Gage

Gage The Battle of Barking Creek

I saw today that Hitler wouldn't let the Mp43 go into production. That someone changed the name to machine pistol and got it into production thru the back door. When Hitler heard the glowing reports it got, he calmed down.

Gives rise to the claim that he was more nutty towards the latter part of his term as chancellor. That comment about the StG-43/44 is on the money Gage.

It's true, but the reason wasn't just pulled out of Hitler's ass... the squad was built around the MG. The rifle and machine pistol infantry were just there to protect the flanks. Hitler truly thought the pure power of the MG was to be most successful in squad to squad combat. So he only would designate new MG's, rifles, and MP's for the most part. Hence the Sturmgewehr being designated a Maschinenpistole...

Except for number (1) there is nothing in your top (8) that was useful to the German people post war.

It had to be useful post war? Damn. I'd better rethink my top ten then. Cheers Spidge.

Am I also correct in thinking that Hitler coined the phrase Assault Rifle (what ever the translation is)?:)

Assault rifle has been perverted lately into a gun control issue. The term is vague so it fits perfectly for the Left. The correct term should be automatic carbine. In fact the StG-44 is really a carbine rather than a rifle but it could also be considered a SMG.

    No it doesn't.......my opinion only.

I just thought it sad that with the amount of technological genius that they did have, there was not much that would be useful after their defeat as improved weaponry seemed to be Adolph's only agenda. (with good cause may I add)

I don't agree that it should have to be beneficial post war...

BTW, one example of one that is though is the Autobahn... the idea of highway systems and etc.

    I left that out...
