I have been in touch with Owen during the course of today and to be honest I didn't think I could face posting anything about Tom but now I felt I should and could. After we met via the Forum Tom became one of the dearest friends I have ever had. Sadly it seems he is nearing the time when he will pass to what the Tankies call the Green Fields. He has received the Last Rites and is being well cared for. The messages from the Forum really cheered him but none of those who care for him would wish him to linger and perhaps now is the time this world needs to let him go in peace to his well deserved rest. I will of course keep Owen informed as soon as I hear any further news.

I have asked my church to pray for you, Tom. They send you this, with which I heartily concur:

"Mr. Canning thank you for your service to your country...we are so blessed with the wonderful men & women who fight for our freedoms. God Bless you Sir!"

When I joined the forum 5.5 years ago, Tom sent me a message saying that he recognised my avatar, and made a reference to some of the banter that used to pass between his outfit and the 'Geordies'. We exchanged a few PMs and I felt I'd arrived in a warm, comfortable place; like 'home'. Then a 'friend' invite arrived from him. He was the first person to send me a 'friend' invite and although I have never met Tom, he has always been, well, a friend; always helpful, always encouraging, always providing sensible advice. I will miss him.

Tom is of the Roman Catholic faith and a firm believer. So, I will break an adult lifetime of non observance and say a prayer for him.

On a separate note, has anyone informed Sapper (Brian Guy) just I case he doesn't know? They are mates...

What superb sentiments, which I humbly endorse. I too will offer up a prayer at Sunday Mass tomorrow.
