This morning I came across a picture of Tom Canning. As most of us only "know" Tom through his comments, I approached him and asked for his permission to publish the picture. So, photo courtesy Tom Canning. Tom: "Good grief - where did you find that photo - taken in Rome on my 21st Birthday - July 45 in the company of Wee Wully Fenn from Glasgow - Gunner in 4th Troop - near the Colloseum - we then walked to the Partheon Piazza for a meal in which the waiter was crying - when asked "WHY" - he pointed to a Funeral Cortege on the other side of the Piazza and said " Maestro Mascagni " the composer of my Mother's favourite Opera - " Cavaleria Rusticana". This brings back many memories - some good as the war had ended - some bad as I had spent six months in various hospitals recovering from wounds suffered at the Gothic Line the previous September."
Another one of Tom in Milan, courtesy of BBC People's War, contributed by Ron Goldstein http://www.bbc.co.uk/history/ww2peopleswar/stories/93/a8065893.shtml
Just as well I didn't have a shower otherwise someone would have taken a picture -it's now 70 years since that pic was taken and I am daily thankful that I can still remember details that far back WEE WULLY was a very small man and a butcher and he was often kidded about being able to see over the counter - he was our 95mm gunner and could land his bombs on a dime… Thanks for the reminder Nijmegan Cheers - Tom
Wonderful photo! I see that's an oldie from member ritsonvaljos always interesting blog spot ... http://2ndww.blogspot.ca/2006_05_01_archive.html Cheers
Tom, I for one think that your Italian Ice Cream was extremely well deserved for what you went through. Best Regards from Berlin Tom
OWEN I smile more than I frown - sometimes fall off the chair in hysterics at some of the idiocies I read now and again the man on WEE WULLY's left is an Italian Ice cream seller - NOT an RSM - who wouldn't dare to give me a 252 for the beret on my 21st Birthday… c'est la guerre - it was finished by then and we were all relaxing…no one to shoot at… Cheers
