We've mused about killing post counts in the past, and Peter's post on the 'changes and tidying up' thread made me think on it again.

Why not be democratic about this and hold a poll on the subject?

    So here it is.
I'm not being particularly democratic here (Call me El Presidente), the poll is more to get the general feeling - we'll continue to make decisions on little details like this behind the scenes really, and plebiscites on everything would be a bit of a nightmare.

My own view; is that it doesn't really matter what the post count is. People get to know who's who, and maybe each individual post gets judged (if that's the word) on it's own merits.
But it can provide an indication for new bods of who's been kicking around for a while - so it isn't really a broken thing, purely a detail.

The barracks not counting will stay - seemed fair enough that if the postcount is indeed any sort of worthwhile indicator at all then it probably shouldn't include rattling on about Sport, Musak, and what random event may have pissed one off that week :D.
In that vein - any other areas that maybe shouldn't count?

Saying again, this ain't a poll with a definite set result at the end - more a bit of curiosity - I'll leave it open for 60 days (though I can extend that if it gets entertaining - multiple answers are allowed, so you can lean one way, but also not really care if you fancy).

I didn't even know the post count had been ditched in the barracks until today.

    Welcoming newcomers. ?

Having said that, if the Post Count really is scrapped then I will still continue to offer a "Welcome Aboard" to newcomers on the basis that without new blood a forum soon becomes a relic.

    Been the post count.
It will annoy Andy who has become top poster.

I would say keep it - it helps newcomers to know which members post frequently.

And there is no sign amongst the 'regulars' that its much of an issue.

I have to agree with Paul as there appears to be no issue with the regular posters.

If it stays or goes, it will not effect those posting new threads and replying to others.

Agreed with above. People for whom this and other shallownesses might be important quickly show themselves the door, or if noxious enough are shown said door by others. Thankfully they come this way not so often, but then I believe our esteemed Moderating body are quicker at intercepting them than we know of :)

I suppose I should read a couple of decent English books, my syntax is getting rather twisted :D

One can't help but feel that, as Za once put it, 'The untouchables' are running the forum. To be inhibited is not in my psyche so I'm not bothered but I would think that some people are influenced by the 'authority' perceived or otherwise by the number of posts attached to a name. Posters are also human and want to put up a good 'post count' hence the number of casual posts made. Comments should stand only on their merits and not be influenced by the count. All in my very humble opinion of course!

Since I arrived here everyone has been very helpful and friendly.
A very rounded bunch of society.
    Thats life.

Comments and assistance abound from all members including new folk.
You could gauge post count on experience which on the whole is correct.
The members numbers have been increasing and the database knowledge is truly superb.
All we want is the success to carry on.

Info and accuracy on the posts is what counts.

If posts "count" then so be it.

Did I write that? If you say so, but that would be unlikely in this forum.

In that case 'we' must be rather subhuman for this is a trait I can't really detect over here, thanks goodness :D

We have rubbish threads like the '4 word story' or the interminable quizzes, but I don't think anyone has used that to bolster their post count. Besides, as the Mods (PBTN) disabled tallying in the entire waffle section even that isn't a post inflating venue at all :)

The post count is neither here nor there with me, I enjoy the forum and never even look at my post count, the moderators are good they keep a watching brief and protect members interests when required.

'4 Word Story' quiz and others are just light relief and treated as so and as CL1 says info with accuracy is what we want.

It is enjoyable to assist and help in any way possible

The post count doesn't bother me in the same way that the previous forum's unearned 'rank' used to. The idea that one could earn stripes by posting on a hobby forum was a bit embarrassing.

To my mind, too many posts is a sign of too much time spent on the internet and not in the real world. Are there really people here who do their best to bump up their count ? Perish the thought. It goes up quickly enough anyway.

Maybe a maximum level such as '1000 plus poster ' would be an adequate guide to members who stick around ?

....Oh, and posts in '1940' should count double ! :p

I quite like that. (Assuming it's possible - will have a shufti)
And it avoids the embarrassment associated with v high postcounts.

    Hmmm.

    Guys
Is this because Drew is now top poster? or is this a serious review of the forums workings and giving it a fine tune.

Oldman that's a peculiar question. It's been a long-standing on/off discussion as VP pointed out.

We used to have a rank system for a bit of fun, and it was dropped too. So, this is genuine, but I wouldn't see it as terribly serious. I've only been a member for a couple of years and in that time the forum's been subjected to quite a few 'nips and tucks'.

Going by my own experience, the post system and the rep system provide a certain encouragement, as well as a guide, to new members ... the longer I've been here, the less significant post counts (and reps) have become. With that in mind Rich's suggestion has some merit as far as I am concerned (but not the 1940 posts counting as double :p ).
