Fantastic tool I will say. But probably because the one making the files was not good a geography I found a minor mistake:unsure: WO 373/92 also contain citations from French Indo China. Guess SAIGON was not famous at the time unlike later on:D

Just giving this a bump. I have been looking at Awards and Honours lately and ahve been using the Ancestry database, which has some glaring holes.

Is there a way to find a citation (if there is one) giving the particular reason for one of these awards please?

I have just been looking at an entry in WO 373 / 27 (Middle East, Greece and Crete), 30 December 1941: Sgt George Johnstone, 812510, 154 L.A.A. Btty, R.A., award of Military Medal. It looks like there should be a link on the left but clicking on it just says 'Documents Online closed'. Possibly the link has been broken by the National Archives?

The citations listed in the file WO373/27 can be downloaded in their entirety for free from here: WO 373; Middle East (Greece and Crete) | The National Archives.

Yes unfortunately the download links have been broken ever since TNA installed their Discovery search engine.
Something else I'll have to get around to fixing on my old WO 373 spreadsheet as well; I'll add them to the list of broken internal links on my threads for when I have a spare hour or two.

You download the files, scroll through the pdfs for the LG date, select the relevant award from the ranking order, and then go through the regiments as they'd appear on Army List. 'Bars' should always be at the start of each award file.

    Here you go...

    Dear All

Is there any way of accessing the Recommendations for Honours and Awards other than paying £3.50 a pop to the NA for an electronic copy?

I am looking to add details of awards to my 2RUR site at 2nd Battalion Royal Ulster Rifles in WW2: 2 RUR Honours and Awards (and is there any way of tracing "Mentioned in Despatches" reports?).

Any advice/assistance would be greatly appreciated...

    Many thanks.

Hi, hope this helps and becomes clear enough ...

Search for the main files via TNA's Discovery engine

    eg WO 373/48 is
    WO 373; 31 August-28 September 1944 | The National Archives
(some files are trickier, in a few cases TNA have added /1 to the end of the file reference)

"Add to Basket" and go through the 'purchase' process to Download for free.

You will have to search each file for
    • correct LG date, then
    • by award in sequence, eg DSO, MC, DCM, MM, then
    • by Army List order, eg RA goes before Infantry
Once found, screen shot any you require.

If you don't have LG date, they can be found by using Discovery
    eg for an individual

Thanks again DBF, I couldn't wait until the weekend and have now tracked down most of the WW" commendations although unfortunately some of the records are missing when looking at the full Catalogue records which appear to be incomplete including:

T/Major JCSG de Longueuil, WO 373/51/346
    7014577 Rfn J Long, WO 373/48/424
    7011693 L/S R McCann, WO 373/48/422
    7012171 Rfn H McGlennon, WO 373/48/425
    7019401 Cpl W Reid, WO 373/50/355
    7010456 Sjt S Cochrane, WO 373/54/1027

If anyone knows how I can gain easy access to these and/or know of any others that are missing would be greatly appreciated.....

Otherwise the 2 RUR awards from WW2 that I have a record of have now been added at 2nd Battalion Royal Ulster Rifles in WW2: 2 RUR Honours and Awards

P.S. In the meantime, I found a slightly different way of tracking down images of Recommendation which I personally found slightly easier/quicker which for anyone interested was:

    1. Search for the individual using their name and regiment (or full refence if held e.g. WO 373/50/356)
Recommendation for Award for Charles, Andrew Rank: Rifleman Service No: ... | The National Archives

    2. Scroll down and make a note of the "Folio Number"
    upload_2019-9-26_11-15-16.png

    3. In a separate browser window eg WO 373/50 is and click on the relevant Catalogue Entry at the top, in this case:
    WO 373; 21 December1944 (part)-1 February 1945
    WO 373; 21 December1944 (part)-1 February 1945 | The National Archives

    4. Scroll down and click on the "Preview an image of this record" link then select a page number at or near the "Folio Number" (in this case Page 559 brings up Folio "Page 551") and then scroll on the next few pages to find the correct Folio Number and specific record....
    upload_2019-9-26_11-23-24.png

This approach means that you don't have to scroll through every single page to try and find your particular page and can then then take screenshot of the image without having to add to basket etc.....

Slightly trickier with the MBE and Legion d'Honneur records as they didn't have Folio Numbers and so way I approached this was, rather than scrolling through every single page, to look for distinguishing features in the Recommendation Card on the first (watermarked) page and then look out for similar features on the group pages summary at the bottom and use the green arrows to scroll through the pages 5/6 at a time (still a long process for documents with hundreds of pages but you can spot obvious mismatches and means have to view far fewer pages.....

    Hope this helps.....
