    The Tilty Archaeology & Local History Group have put together a great little site of reminiscences, photographs and audio interviews linked to their village in NW Essex. There's a wealth of home front material here, but also some snippets of service life overseas.

    I was delighted to turn up photographs of L/C Ernest F. Law [6014492], a 1/4th Essex R.A.P./bandsman of whom I was hitherto unaware. He was wounded at Cassino on 16/3/44 when a wall collapsed on him and evacuated home (the date seems more likely to be 18/3 -- I have a suspicion he first suffered a shrapnel wounds and then had the wall collapse on him two days later). He survived, but died relatively young of a brain tumour, it seems. His younger sister has only fond memories of him.
