I have been send these photographs of a Thunderflash Box.

The Box was said to have been carried in a Flying Boat operating out of County Fermanagh.
You can see that the box has been painted red with white wording.

Would this have been done for use on Aircraft?

Can't imagine any real use for thunderflashes on a plane.

But a thunderbox might have been very useful on those long Atlantic patrols. I wouldn't open the lid...

As no one has come along with a more authorative answer -
Catalina and Sunderland Flying Boats operated out of RAF Castle Archdale on anti-submarine patrols.
If they did carry Thunderflashes I would suggest they would be used to communicate with submerged friendly submarines or more likely to simulate bombs/depth charges during exercises. Thunderflashes still make a very loud 'thud' when they go off under water.
