Threads with clear titles, in the right section, get a better response.

    Aye Chaps,
There's been quite a bit of thread-shifting lately - shuffling stuff into the right section.
Also a fair few thread titles that don't really reflect or expose the content.
I know our list of forums is a tad tortuous (believe me, it's better than it was), but it is worth the effort of finding the appropriate Forum section before starting a new thread.

Everyone seems to browse WW2T in different ways; some range wide, while some of the more specialist chaps stick almost exclusively to their own headings of interest.
So if you plop a query where someone that can help is more likely to spot it, you'll likely get to better info more efficiently.
Individual sections obviously move more slowly than the place as a whole too - a thread/query in the right section will be buried by new ones much more slowly than something thrown into General.

Many members also just ignore generic sort of thread titles (I know I often do). A clear title will catch the eye of the right people (And just as importantly also improves the chance of a passing Googler who may have some info spotting it - Google likes thread titles).

This has been a public information thread on behalf of WW2Talk.

    Cheers,
    ~A

Titles with 12 words or more are often exhausting to the reader and are generally ignored.

I mentioned to some of the Mods recently that if members have a 1940 unit enquiry regarding say Royal Artillery or the Royal Engineers for example they will stand a far better chance of me posting some information at some point than if they put it in another section like the RA or RE sub forum.

Every so often when I have collected more 1940 files and diaries from Kew (I have around 450 diaries now and about 900 to go) I go back through the 1940 sub forum to see if I can add anything further so old 1940 threads are never really forgotten - I doubt do the same in other sections so there's probably quite a few around the forum I could add information too-Its just finding them. If anyone comes across a 1940 thread in another section please ask the Mods for it to be considered to be moved into the 1940 section and I will pick up on it at some point.

    Cheers
    Andy

I should perhaps also add that composing thread titles at nearly 3AM while overfull of Polish Spirit can also hinder clarity somewhat...
    Hoohum.

    1940 Threads....

    We will remember them...:)

I'd really like to see the sub-forum details included on the recent threads page. This forum is just too big now to keep up with everything.

Did try when you mentioned it before, mate.
But the Portal plug-in is a bastard, doesn't appear possible (though it's like diving in silt trying to adjust Portal settings, so it might be there somewhere).

If you use 'New Posts' instead, that does give you the sub-section down the right-hand-side.

Oh, cheers Adam. I had forgotten that I asked before. It must've been 03.00hrs and overfull of Islay.

I'll try using 'New Posts' as the first page and see how I get on.

It is not only overly long titles that may be ignored, but the overly vague and the overly brief, e.g. "Help with my grandfather", or sometimes just "Help".

Go to the sub-forum that you want and top left you'll see a small 'New Thread' box.

how do i start a new thread

    1) - Open the site: http://www.ww2talk.com/

    2) - Choose your area; click 'Browse All Forums' in the top left bar to take you to the list of topics: http://ww2talk.com/forum/.

    3) - Clicking on an appropriate heading brings up another page, and on the top left of the list of threads there is a button with 'New Thread' on it.

    4) - Click that, fill out the box with your query and a title, click submit, and it'll appear on the main forums.

Owen-I can sense your entirely reasonable frustration -surprised my random postings have been tolerated so long. All I say to people who are new to this forum (aka xxxxxx) just read some stuff before launching into posting! The forum is brilliant when you get to know it

Often the problem is to find the right 'heading' from Owen's post above. New members not familiar with the site can find it confusing.
It's not a major problem - if a post is placed in the wrong heading it can be moved by Moderators. Gives them something to do!
Main thing is to give brief but accurate info in the thread title.

Just bumping this as I've noticed a few threads with just 'help' or 'info please' as titles.

Bumping thread in vain hope newer members will see it & have more descriptive thread titles.

    Nudge nudge.
Maybe a tad sloppy on choice of forum areas recently, chaps.
'General' being a bit over-used perhaps?
Not the end of the world - Just saying like.
    ;)

Oh lordy; reading this - We really do have to re-write all the forum use info left over from the previous VB installation. Most of it no longer makes much sense.

Bumping thread again as I've had to edit a few thread titles of late to be more specific of what info was required.
