thanks for that jjs.you mention ken patterson,i just wandered if anyone knows if he is still with us?as maryport where he is from is near to me,thanks again

    Hi Nadine,

I don't know any more that you do Im afraid. I just followed the link to the BBC site with his story.

Not sure how you would find out if he's still around! Maybe someone on this site will know, but they may have just found the story being so interested in the topic. The BBC would appear to have quite a large WW2 section under various subject headings, they would be watching out for personal accounts if they are regular visitors to the site I would imagine.

There is a link on the page with the story to the BBC Cumbria Volunteer Story Gatherers, it is for people to phone through their stories but maybe you could try there................

    BBC Cumbria Volunteer Story Gatherers

All of these stories have been posted by BBC People's War Volunteer Storygatherers from across Cumbria.
If you have a Cumbrian war memory or story, or you'd like to get involved as a volunteer storygatherer, contact the CSV Action Desk at BBC Radio Cumbria on 0845 300 77 99.

    Best of luck,
    Parnel.

Thats wonderful news. I'm glad you got to meet & chat with him. Very special, even though he didn't have any information on your uncle.

Thanks for letting me know too, not everyone gets back to fill in the extra details.

    Regards,
    Parnel.

    Hi Nadine,

It will be interesting to hear how you get on with that. I haven't thought to contact them yet. I have tried the Museum of Army Flying at Middle Wallop, but unfortunately they have nothing on Jim. I am quite settled really about it all. I have an amazing amount of information that I have been able to share with the family, most of which came to me through the members of this site. If anything else comes to light it will be a bonus and I continue to keep an eye out. I have also written to The Eagle, the Glider Pilot Regiment Association magazine, in the hope of finding someone that knew him. The chances are extremely slim I know, but I have accepted that I may have all I am going to find on him.

Good luck and let us know how you get on.. Its Parnel by the way.

Please note, as I referred to in a previous posting to this thread, the BBC "People's War" article about glider pilot Ken Patterson referred to in this thread, it was posted on his behalf by 'Yours truly'. I also had the honour of visiting Arnhem with Ken and his family on another ocassion.

Please note that no futher contributions can be added to the BBC "People's War" website through the Radio Cumbria Volunteer desk (the whole project was archived in early 2006). However, BBC Radio Cumbria (the local BBC radio station covering Stan's home area, Nadine) may be interested to hear your request for information and may relay it differently. There have been some similar requests in the recent past which produced the desired result.

Did you ever make contact with the Cumbria Parachute Regt. Assn. to see if any of their other members may be able to assist, Nadine?

Another alternative tack you may try could be to contact the local newspaper for the Eden valley (i.e. Penrith & District), the 'Cumberland & Westmorland Herald'. Possibly you could send a letter to the editor about your family's search and ask if any other local people have information that could help. Even if there were no responses you would be no worse off than at present.

Website link for the 'Cumberland & Westmorkand Herald':
Newspaper Cumbria, Lake District news - Cumberland and Westmorland Herald - Contact

Good luck with your continuing quest, Nadine.

For info....whilst it is a good idea to try and contact the Cumbria PRA, I know the Chairman of that branch and they have no Arnhem vets left in the branch......the last one died a couple of years ago and he was from memory a signaller.....Just to try and save you going down a dead end......

Cumbrian PRA member Ken Patterson is an Arnhem veteran. He was one of the fellows who raced to the bridge with Johnny Frost and spent some time as a POW.
