There's more to add later which I received helped from member Veronica from the Casualty Lists. I wrote to the National Archives of Scotland in case there was an Inventory of his Will filed which might have revealed his mothers first name, but that came back negative. Tricky Dicky found the Ancestry entry. Thomas is mentioned on the Scottish National War Memorial Website. It states he was born in Edinburgh, but having searched the Scotlandspeople website I can find no Thomas born in Edinburgh area for the estimated year of birth 1917/18.
