    Hi Everyine,
Can anyone tell me what the Grave Registration Report Form tells us about Thomas JONES below:-

    Commonwealth War Graves Commission
    Aircraftman 1st Class
    JONES, THOMAS
    Service Number 948629
    Died 19/06/1941
    Aged 19
    Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve
    (The Grave Registration Report Form gives more information – No. and Rank – 948629 A.C.1; UNIT – 25 .E.F.T.S. R.A.F. (V.R.)

Son of Thomas and Phoebe Jones, of Queensferry, Flintshire.

    INSCRIPTION

ETERNAL REST GRANT UNTO HIM, O LORD

    Buried at PETERBOROUGH (EASTFIELD) CEMETERY

Would the information tell me what his role was in the War? I know that R.A.F. (V.R.) means Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. Any help would be appreciated. Many thanks in advance. Regards, Mavis Williams

His rank is shown as AC1 - others more RAF minded will be able to explain better than I - but I guess hes an Aircraftsman Class 1 - i.e he works on maintaining the aircraft, hes ground based I think

AC1 Jones would be a pilot under training at No 25 EFTS when it was based at RAF Sibson on the west side of the A1 north of Peterborough. His death is probably the result of a flying accident from an elementary trainer such as the Tiger Moth.

No 25 EFTS was as designated as Polish and after moving from Sibson to Hucknall stayed at Hucknall for the remainder of the war.

AC1 Jones's classification of AC1 would be a training stage classification...ultimately he would have passed out after receiving advanced flying training at other units with the minimum rank of Sergeant.

Passed Sibson many times after the war since my Aunt lived at the nearby village of Warmington...the road network has changed greatly since the A 605 was reconfigured but the Wansford to Elton road on which the airfield stands, now a flying club, remains as I see it, as it was,a country road during the war.

Mavis can you stop posting RAF queries in the Airborne forum. I have explained why in your profile several times.

    Have moved this thread.

Oh dear, my sincere apologies Owen, I obviously forgot, I always look at the "Unit History," and choose whatever the unit of the services my person was in. I will remember next time. My many thanks again to the members of the Forum, TD Harry Ree and CL1I am glad you all have patience with me, you have added so much to his story especially the photograph of the Gravestone and the explanation of the Initials I posted, you have opened up the story once again. Kindest regards, Mavis

    Hi Tricky Dicky,
This is definitely the correct Thomas Jones. He was my late father’s first cousin. I have a copy of the same photograph in my possession. Where did you find your copy?

    Hi,

Welcome to the forum. Sadly your query will remain unanswered as Richard (TD) passed away over 2 years ago.

    Hi Steve,
Thank you for your message about TD (Richard), I didn't know his name, just as TD, I was aware that he had sadly passed away, I only answered the message left by David Johnstone yesterday, it came out the blue. I don't know why.

    Thanks again, Steve,
    Mavis
