I'm on the wrong side of the pond to be able to go and view those records sadly. I'll see what sort of options I have (not sure writing a cheque would work, since it would be in $$ and not british pounds.) in regards to ordering a copy from them.

I would have thought some sort of reference would have been (relatively) easy to find in relation to his death. Hopefully it wasn't another accident!

I have transcribed the following information from WO 417/41, British Army Casualty Lists, other ranks, 1939 – 1945, hope this will assist:

Casualty list No. 800 (Soldiers & Auxiliaries)
This list details all casualties reported to the War Office Casualty Section for the 24 hours ended 9am 17 April 1942.

    Expeditionary Forces, Middle East

    Died as result of accident
    Royal Engineers
    2139457
    Callaghan V
    Dvr i/c
    Date of casualty 23/3/1942

Afraid that there is no more information.

The part of the family certainly had bad luck...2 sons dead in WW2 due to accidents.

Thanks for the information - will try and look more information up on the date.
