Duston village memorial as since moving here 1992. Followed by a pint and a chaser and a quiet toast to a few names..none of them heroes..but all ended their days for one reason or another in uniform. Then another cheers to all who travelled the chessington and headly court road with me, well you did ask.

I will probablygo to our local veteran's graveyard, which was completed just a couple of years ago dedicated to veteran's from Montana. It is just west of Billings, and all veterans who wish to be re-intered there can be at no cost to their families. There are now hundereds in place, and it is supported by veteran organizations. I also always share this poem from Don Crawford, since people get so tired of "Flander's Fields".

"Please wear a poppy," the lady said
And held one forth, but I shook my head.

Then I stopped and watched as she offered them there,
    And her face was old and lined with care;
But beneath the scars the years had made
There remained a smile that refused to fade.

A boy came whistling down the street,
    Bouncing along on care-free feet.
His smile was full of joy and fun,
"Lady," said he, "may I have one?"

When she's pinned in on he turned to say,
"Why do we wear a poppy today?"
The lady smiled in her wistful way
And answered, "This is Remembrance Day,

And the poppy there is the symbol for
The gallant men who died in war.
And because they did, you and I are free -
That's why we wear a poppy, you see.

"I had a boy about your size,
With golden hair and big blue eyes.
He loved to play and jump and shout,
Free as a bird he would race about.

As the years went by he learned and grew
and became a man - as you will, too.
"He was fine and strong, with a boyish smile,
But he'd seemed with us such a little while

When war broke out and he went away.
I still remember his face that day
When he smiled at me and said, Goodbye,
I'll be back soon, Mom, so please don't cry.

"But the war went on and he had to stay,
And all I could do was wait and pray.
His letters told of the awful fight,
(I can see it still in my dreams at night),

With the tanks and guns and cruel barbed wire,
And the mines and bullets, the bombs and fire.
"Till at last, at last, the war was won -
And that's why we wear a poppy son."

The small boy turned as if to go,
Then said, "Thanks, lady, I'm glad to know.
That sure did sound like an awful fight,
But your son - did he come back all right?"

    A tear rolled down each faded check;
She shook her head, but didn't speak.
I slunk away in a sort of shame,
    And if you were me you'd have done the same;

For our thanks, in giving, if oft delayed,
Thought our freedom was bought - and thousands paid!
And so when we see a poppy worn,
Let us reflect on the burden borne,

By those who gave their very all
When asked to answer their country's call
That we at home in peace might live.
Then wear a poppy! Remember - and give!

I'll be at the Boleyn Ground, unveiling a new plaque I've spent the last eight months organising: the only memorial to my GtGrandad's unit, the 13th Essex Hammers of Ww1.

I'll pull the cord after proudly watching as a 20 man Colour Party from C (Essex) Company, 1st Royal Anglians parade the original Hammers Battalion Kings Colours
followed by a 1RAR bugler will play Last Post before wreaths are laid.

I do enjoy watching the Whitehall service on telly, the only problem ive had is that i prefer to be somewhere in person. But with the advent of BCC iplayer I can go to the service in town, then sit down and watch the Cenotaph service in the evening

This year will be spent at home , and to watch it on tv,
Thou other years we have gone to SALTBURN -BY-THE-SEA and placed a cross at the memorial there.

In the link is the memorial, and that year is our cross place in the tray in front ....which is the darker one ,as it carries G/D,s regiments arms on it .

I will try and get into central London again, dependent on trains etc! (as they seem to always be closed/being repaired/repairing lines etc). I will also see which if either of my daughters will be coming with me.

However I told my boss that on Remembrance Day itself I will be going up to the Cenotaph and I hoped he didnt mind, and he said he would be coming with me! We are then going for a drink after work as one of the guys I work for has his birthday on 11th! So one for him, and one or two for those that went before and made the ultimate sacrifice.

    Regards to All

Took the kids for the first time last year... Alas, weather meant only a fly-by of the C-47, but no poppy drop. My lad (7 years old) was well impressed with the artillery fire to mark the start and end of minutes silence.
