I have very limited knowledge about WW2 and do feel rather afraid of asking stupid questions.

We actually want people like yourself to ask what you'd consider stupid questions.
Ask anything you like no matter how silly it may sound.

Hello everyone. I joined to get some info about a relative and have had such an incredible responses to my somewhat vague enquiries from the people on here. I have very limited knowledge about WW2 and do feel rather afraid of asking stupid questions. But I will stick around and if I can contribute something useful then I will.

No such thing as a stupid question

    ask away

I too realized some of my questions and answers would sound dumb, but so strong was my desire for any information of my father's service that sounding like an ass was a fair trade off.

Not only did I get more than in my wildest dreams but also shown that some assumptions I had made were dead wrong, and this helped me find a few answers on my own.

    My gratitude knows no bounds.:)

    Clive,

    I agree totally.

It is also a little like not wanting to put up one's hand in schoolclass for fear of all thinking you dumb.

Then when you do ask a question, you realise that many more really wanted to ask the same question, but fear prevented it.

    I say ask away, regardless.

There is always something new to learn on this forum every day.

    Regards
    Tom

I've been a member for about 14 months and only made 6 posts during that time but spent countless hours reading a lot of the posts and would like to state that I appreciate the input from the regulars and its a fantastic resource.

I may only pop on this site every few weeks but its always worthwhile.

In this day and age - I put it down to sheer bad manners - it's all around us these days - so why should it be any different on the forum - we put up with it daily in the stores etc and DO nothing about it so what can we expect - personally - I think it would be nice if everyone acted as we old timers do and extend GOOD manners to everyone - but - It's a different world to-day and manners are away down the slope...
My wife when walking through London on one of her visits heard very bad language being used by some youths to giggling schoolgirls - she stopped and remonstrated with them pointing out that English was a wonderful language and there was no need for using the worst of it .....the youths stood up and apologised.....my Daughter was having a heart attack as she thought that knives would enter the proceedings....my wife then told her that if no one teaches good manners - how can they differentiate - as the schools don't seem to bother to-day !

So Adam - you might point out to Newbies that GOOD manners are appreciated here ...
    Cheers

Asking why humans behave is for me one of life's great mysteries. After studying the concept of buyer behaviour and writing a thesis on choice I'm not sure I know any more.
I'm a XXXXXX looking for some specific information about my Dad. I stumbled across the site and have now spent several hours reading posts and being amazed at the information that is provided for free - a rare occurrence.

The gents and ladies who contribute to this site may a say in advance how appreciative I am for the help, the shifting of my thread, when I put it somewhere it wasn't supposed to be and the "good" vibe I get even in this electronic environment.

Keep asking why however please never stop helping because there are a lot of people who appreciate ALL your efforts.

I think some of you guys who have posted lately are worrying too much.:)

This thread really refers to the like who come, ask, receive in abundance, but never feel the need to say thanks or acknowledge the help given. This doesn't bother me that much, but I can understand those who do feel a little bit miffed by that sort of treatment.

As has been said recently, ask away, we've all been there.

maybe some of those under discussion were unfortunate enough to start one of those threads which another member can't resist shunting into a side track. Despite decent replies, it's tempting not to bother returning when this happens.

So I suppose the moral of the story is if you havent anything useful to say then STFU.

Hi All. Forgive me! This is my first and probably my only post even though I have been a member for 3 months or so now, but I should like to answer the original question in post #1 from my perspective.
I have only recently become interested in WW2 and because of that I have very little knowledge of the subject. I am also far too young to have had any personnal experience of the war, it ended several years prior to my birth. I also have no original photo's to display so any input from me would probably be futile to say the least.
Having said all that, I find that the "Forum" is an extremely valuable tool for learning about the conflict and a very interesting way to improve my knowledge and understanding of the various aspects of the war.
I visit the site quite regularly and I always find the input from you regular posters worth reading and for that I thank you all.

On another forum, I once commented that threads often had a tendency to wander from their original theme. I was informed that that was "part of their charm" and that I should sit back and enjoy the ride. That "charm" is the main reason that I seldom start or subscribe to threads.
If a person thinks enough of a subject to start a thread, then it would seem like common courtesy to respect that person's efforts and wishes. If perchance you happen to have an original thought, then start another thread. Don't stick it where it doesn't apply.

    Just my opinion,
    Pat

I originally joined this forum to find details of my Uncle who died on return from WW2. The direction I received from the researchers has allowed me to make further enquiries via service records (not yet received). This said, I log into the forums every day to read the requests & responses by all who use the site, and find it all so interesting. For that I thank all you researchers who are doing a first class job in putting so many people in touch with their families war history.
