Pictures of the Zig (Uitwaterings) canal. Holland. Action fought 17th November 1944, Class 40 bridge built 18th November. 1944 Cameron Bridge is in the background, 2008 same view. The Bridge ran parallel to the Nederweert canal. The road is a main road to-day.
The house has an added floor and is a artists studio, it stands to the left of the canal as you view.
just found it on Google earth at 51 19'26.02" N - 5 54'07.30" E. photos on there similar to above plus one looking from where the bridge would have been back to the canal.

Some time ago, I found a picture on the Internet, of a damaged crossing over the canal at Weert, in Holland. The picture showed a small crowd crossing the canal, with planks that had been laid to fill the damage, In it was a young boy, and one was a Nurse??? They were all on the bridge, and coming towards the camera.... Celebrating liberation

Thing is, I was underneath the bridge at the time, in a boat checking that it was safe.

I have never been able to find that picture again.... IT was at the time of the liberation of Weert. I recall it well. As the water wagon took the wrong turning and was never seen again. And that we lost a man that a German patrol spirited away during the night. That was on the high bank in Weert. I recall the planks very well, as we put them there to enable the folk to cross.

Don't ask me how I recall all these things.... much of my experiences made a deep impression on a 19 year old lad

    Ron

I was also at the Slag of Arnhem Info centre last September, the image of the bridge with the damage really brings it home to you the ferocity of the Battle,
What I like about this image is how close the houses where to the bridge so can imagine the fighting which took place there.

Whilst this isn't strictly a "then & now" I thought some people may find it interesting (yes, the 'Arnhem' lot ).
It shows the Palace of Justice in Arnhem in September 1944. Circled is a damaged pillar, one of four that stood at the front of the building. This pillar now stands as the Airborne Monument at the far nothern end of John Frost Bridge.
    All the best...........
