    Hi Guys
In the film there is a scene after Peter Holt gets out of his chute, when a jeep pulls up and an officer has a conversation with him and invites him to jump on board.
Has anyone any thoughts on who that might be? Is it Ian Toler. The moustache looks right, but I'm aware a lot of pilots had one in those days and Toler makes no mention of the film in his book

    Hi Pompey,
I think it might be Capt Livingstone of C Coy, 7 KOSB . I have a pic somewhere of Urquhart and Livingstone standing together, which was taken during the making of TITG.

    All the best..........:)

    Hi all,
This might be well known and well documented, but will put in the little I know, Corporal Vic Massingham KOSB appears in the film, TITG (sitting on the stairs I think).
Vic Massingham took up residence in the Royal Hospital Chelsea some years ago.
    regards lofty

    Hi philip

Nice to touch base with you again. Robert V was on the walk that we did last month and was as ever, very informative. But even Robert confesses to not havibg the names of all the participants. Kind regards G

    Hi Paul,

Nice call, you may be right. I think I was convinced it might be Toler because I believe he ended up driving around in one of the Recce jeeps, so rather imagined he might be doing the same during the film.
Anyway, I added one more name to the list last night. Hugh Carling in C Squadron GPR, ha a chapter in his book where he talks about filming TITG.

In addition, I think two of the unknown unit guys, in the list in the booklet, were also Glider Pilots. Sergeant G Higgins was in C Squadron and Staff Sergeant Laurence Turnbull in F Squadron.

Mr Theirs is the Glory, is Robert Voskuil from Oosterbeek, he is a boardmember of the Friends of the Museum, he is the best person to contact.

Indeed, and a few weeks ago i was happy to help him with some valuable information wich was unkown to him;) Had he not mentioned TITG at our meeting i probably would not have thought about it at all:).

Do you have Harry Boardman C .Company 156 Bn, on your list?

No, Allan didn't have anyone from 156 Bn, so Harry is definitely one to add. Thanks Philip.

cheers Lofty, Vic was one of those that Allan had listed, but it's nice to know exactly when and where he appeared in the film. Thanks for the pic, Taken at the White House I see.

There were more 156 Bn in it, suprised this is not mentioned in from Delhi to Arnhem.

One thing I've noticed whilst going through the list of names at the back of the booklet is that the units attributed to the men are their "post Arnhem" units and not always the units with whom they fought during the battle.

For instance, Sgt W Morohan is listed as 2 Para but he fought at Arnhem with 10 Para, the same is true of Cpls Kirkham and Wilkinson. Also the ranks shown are their ranks at the time the film was made and this is not always the same as their ranks at Arnhem.

Just thought I'd mention this as it was starting to confuse me!

    All the best............

Thanks that is very useful to know. I haven't done an 'audit' of all the names in the booklet against my lists. But I know that there were a couple that I did check that I couldn't find. This may be why, if I've been looking under the wrong unit.
My problem is I'm only up to around 9200 names, so I'm aware that I still have some gaps to fill.
I seem to recall a thread somewhere that you had where you talked about your list of personnel at Arnhem. Can you point me in the right direction to find that.
Incidentally, great to see the new 4th Parachute Brigade HQ site with all their guys listed. Very helpful, thanks Philip.

    Cheers Philip.
I suspect that some of them may be. I haven't had the time yet to go back through my books looking for TITG references, but I will try and thumb through the significant books like FDTA, Dragons, Off at last etc, to see what they have to say.

Unfortunately, there aren't enough hours in the day at the moment. So this thread may be a slow burner.

The "list" isn't on the forum mate (or anywhere else for that matter). It is still a "work in progress" as it were and I think it will be for a long time to come yet! The database currently stands at just short of 11,000 names but this includes many that weren't at Arnhem.

    All the best...........:)

Hi, no I didn't think it was.... and don't worry I don't want to nick anything from your list or Philips. I'm just curious as to how you've gone about it and what some of your sources may have been.
Until we get a definitive book on every unit with a reliable list then I expect I'm going to struggle with a couple of the Para Battalions.
The other problem is duplicates, like the La Personne/Lappasonne type queries. So many guys are Medics, signallers, drivers, FOUs, HQ officers attached to divisional etc, that there are several hundred duplicates to adjust fo for.
Amyway maybe some day we can have a chat on it and compare notes.

    Hello mate,

I think I may have given the wrong impression. When I said "it's not on the internet or anywhere else" I wasn't implying that it's all "Hush-Hush" and "Top Secret", it's just that it's not finished and it's also in a format which, I fear, may not transfer to the 'net very easily :(. I am more than happy to search the list to help anyone with any questions they have and I'd also be more than happy to have a chat with you about it :).

As to the question about how I've gone about constructing it, it's really quite straight forward. I began going through all my books, page by page and every name I came across was entered onto the database. Simples!!! :D

Seriously though, you can appreciate how much time such a process takes, hence the fact that it is NOWHERE near finished. I have, to date, been through about 74 books out of just over 500 and already there are 11,000 names on the system.

    All the best...........:)

Snap!. I think we have reached pretty much the same position from very similar routes. Hundreds and hundreds of hours reading through books, surfing the net, picking the brains of contacts and gradually accumulating data. It's taken several years to get as far as I have and I'm very much aware that this is a marathon not a sprint.
I'm grateful for info from great people like Horsa Passenger, but ultimately this is a one man labour of love. I think it takes a certain sort of compulsive/obsessive/diligent/thorough personality to do what we've done.
So it's just nice to raise a glass to a kindred spirit. :D

Indded, but as ever the last ones are the hardest ones to get.

The fun is the chase, as I'm sure you know after all the years you've been collating information.

I've enjoyed visiting your new 4th Para Br HQ website and offer my congrats to you and Jeroen on that and the new information panel. I look forward to visiting it next time year.
