If you ever get the chance, watch the film "Theirs is the Glory". It's old, black and white and the acting is in parts terrible. But it's the story of Arnhem, filmed shortly after the war, filmed in and around Arnhem and played by soldiers that were actually there. No 'stars', no actors and no 'Hollywood'.

Just ordered this from a book club I'm in, it was on one of the extra leaflets which normally get discarded without a second look, looking forward to its arrival.

I got my copy (DVD) from the Airborne Museum in Osterbeek after looking for it for years. Weapons, tactics and locations all authentic as you could hope for. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

This looks very much the booklet that came with the video when it was sold by After the Battle in the 1980's......I still watch my VHS version....I call it the 'viewing notes booklet'.....

Not sure if it came with the DVD version.....

My copy of the DVD didn't come with the booklet, and mine is an official copy, not a pirate copy.

anyone know if that DVD is still available anywhere - I am sick and tired of watching the Americanised version every month on Canadian TV of the "Bridge Too Far" - invariably followed by the "Longest Day" - then "Midway" !
    Cheers

I wouldn't call it Americanised, since it describes the battles from the British, German and Japanese point of view as well. And sticks to the historical facts as described in the books. :)

This interesting aluminium plaque was produced at the time of the premiere of the original films release. Made from parts of the crashed gliders. I'm not sure how many were produced.

From Harlen Glenn's 'For King and Country - British Airborne Uniforms, Insignia & Equipment in World War II'

It must be still around Tom, as it was released some two years ago, best change would be Airborne Forces Museum.

Will put the other pages on the site, later this week.

Can I point out that I said the booklet came with the video in the 1980's not repeat not the DVD.......so if you have the DVD you won't have the booklet....

You can also get the DVD from www.airborneshop.com at Aldershot....

    Ivan -

Just little things emphasing the American superior point of view - like Rundstedt being asked who will be leading the allied attacks -
"oh Patton - he is their best - Eisenhower is not stupid enough to allow Montgomery to lead"

Then at the end we have an American Major General - Airborne Div. Commander - ordering Lt Gen. Horrocks XXX Corps Commander and Lt Gen. Browning - Airborne Corps to "get them out" !

and so they organised the relief of 1st Airborne !

    Laughable really !
    Cheers

The first thing I would say is OK, since as far as my knowledge on this subjects reach, out of all of the Allied generals the Germans were REALLY afraid only from Patton. Montgomery was considered as a primadona.

It is often claimed the Germans were 'afraid' of Patton but you will never find a wartime German source saying this. It is one of many myths about the man.
